Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, of the Red Ajah, is one of the fiercest women in the White Tower. Many Aes Sedai seem to be hard steel with a covering of fine silk. Elaida dispenses with the silk. Elaida is a handsome, hard woman.
For years, Elaida served as the advisor to Queen Morgase Trakand of Andor. This was a position of great authority and
responsibility, and Elaida’s Elaida also has the talent of Foretelling, the ability to predict the future in a general sort of way. Elaida had a Foretelling concerning Rand al’Thor, saying, “Pain and division come to the whole world, and this man stands at the heart of it.” 19 Elaida did not know then that Rand was the Dragon Reborn, else she surely would have gentled him and killed the world’s only chance of salvation. Elaida returned to the White Tower when Morgase chose to no longer have an Aes Sedai advisor. Back in the Tower Elaida displayed a great interest in the two women from Emond’s Field, Egwene al’Vere and Nynaeve al’Meara. It was clear to them, though, that Elaida was most interested in Rand. With the stilling of Siuan Sanche, the White Tower split. Elaida was chosen as the Amyrlin
Seat of the Aes Sedai remaining in the Tower. She was forced to choose Alviarin Freidhen, a
White, as her Keeper of the Chronicles. It was necessary to solidify her claim as Amyrlin, but Elaida resented that she was forced to choose a Keeper who was not Red. As Amyrlin, Elaida began the construction of a palace for herself. But she is not as strong an Amyrlin as it would seem to the casual observer. The true power in the White Tower is Alviarin. Elaida realizes this, but is unable to break Alviarin’s control of the Tower. So long as Elaida reigns as Amyrlin in the White Tower, the Tower’s policy will continue to be misguided and narrow-minded. Elaida, fearing to be a weak Amyrlin, might very well go down in Tower history as the worst Amyrlin Seat ever. |
