Ishamael Before turning to the Shadow, Ishamael’s name was Elan Morin Tedronai. Ishamael means “Betrayer of Hope” in the Old
Tongue. Ishamael was also known as Ba’alzamon, Heart of the Dark, and Soul of the Shadow. Elan Morin Tedronai was a prominent philosopher of the time. He believed that the war between the soul of Lews Therin
and the Shadow had gone on since creation. He viewed this as an endless battle between the Creator and the Dark One, using human surrogates.
After turning to the Shadow, Ishamael fought hard to convert Lews Therin to the Shadow. It was Ishamael’s belief that in some previous turnings of the Wheel, Lews
Therin’s soul had become a champion of the Dark One. Ishamael was among the first, if not the first, to pledge his soul to the Dark One. He was the strongest of the Forsaken; only Lews Therin himself was could hold as much of the Power.
When Lews Therin and the Hundred Companions sealed the Bore, Ishamael was not fully trapped. Instead, he was aware and able to touch the world. In fact, speaking to Rand al’Thor in a dream, he claimed never to have been imprisoned. He was at Lews Therin’s side
when he killed every person who carried a drop of his blood; Ishamael even boasted that he told the Kinslayer to do this deed. He also gave Lews Therin the few moments of sanity necessary
to realize what he had done. It was Ishamael who sent the Trollocs south out of the Blight during the Trolloc Wars. He also claims to have been at the great Artur Hawkwing’s side.
Ishamael states that it was his doing that Hawkwing hated Aes Sedai. It was his influence that caused the High King send his fleets out to conquer the world. And
it was at Ishamael’s suggestion that Hawkwing refused the offer of Aes Sedai Healing that might have saved him.
In more recent times, it was the Betrayer of Hope who named Alviarin head of the Black Ajah, years before the weakening of the seals allowed any other of the Forsaken to walk to
world. While it is unknown if it was always so, Ishamael now appears with flames in place of his mouth and eyes. None are sure whether this is a trick of the Power, or the result of his entrapment. |
