Well, here is the inevitable, another "Band Bio". I knew it was
going to happen, you knew it was going to happen. Anyways, this basically sums
up Our Lady Peace's humble beginnings :)
It began with them wanting to make an indie record, so they recorded a 3
song demo at Arnyard Studios, owned by Arnold Lanni (their current producer)
in Weston, Ontario. Lanni obviously saw talent in these guys and gave a copy
of the tape to his brother Robert, who was head of the Coalition Entertainment Group
at the time. He, in turn, got in into the hands of Rick Camilleri, the President of Sony.
By the time Sony had put in their offer to these young rising stars, Geffen and Interscope were
already in their doorstep. The members of Our Lady Peace were faced with a major decision. Both Geffen and Interscope
wanted to hear more of their material before signing them, but Sony's offer of recording more songs
like the ones they had had on their demo without the outside interference was the sweetest.
4 guys from Toronto
who've been together for about 14 months make a 3 song demo and get
signed to a major label. This is not a common story in today's market,
but a familiar one to the members of Our Lady Peace.
In the end, they signed with Sony because Sony had also given them 100% artistic and creative control in CD production. They signed with Relativity in the States. At that time, Relativity was a label that was mostly rap, who were just beginning an Alternative section.
