The Four Cycles

The history of Rialos is figured in Cycles. The current year is the ear 30, Fourth Cycle. Each Cycle starts over after one of the Drow Wars. Every thousand years or so, the Dark Elves emerge to conquer the surface kingdoms. So far, they've been repelled four times, but every time it seems a little bit harder, and things are a little bit closer.

The First Cycle
In the dawn of time, the God Rial looked at creation, and saw that it was empty. He Decided to Create the world. And so Rialos, meaning "Jewel of Rial" was created. Rial also created 9 gods to watch over this world. However, The Nemesis, a Dark God, saw this, and created 9 gods to
wreak havoc. A great war of the gods was fought. The gods of good, those created by Rial, were triumphant. All but one of the dark gods were sent back into the pits they had come from, licking their wounds...the remaining god had been destroyed.

At this time, the gods began to
notice the inhabitants of Rialos, small, weak creatures called humans. It was decided that they needed guidance, so a new race was created to help them: the elves. The Dark Gods saw this, and grew jealous. They wanted their own worshippers, their own people. They eventually figured
out that humans were often easily corrupted, and began leading them down a dark path. But at the same time, they wanted races to serve them the way the elves served the gods of good. Thus were the humanoid races created: The orcs, the trolls, and a host of others. This led the gods of good to become furious; how dare they create so much evil? A second war was fought, this time on the surface of Rialos. The elves fought for the good gods, while the humanoids fought for the Dark Gods. During the course of this war, the Dark Gods unveiled their greatest corruption: the
Dark Elves.

The Drow and Iynysyn races were terrifying; All the elves had fair hair, skin and eyes, but they Drow had coal black skin and piercing red eyes, and the Iynysyn had dark hair and cold, dark eyes. They had powers far beyond those of the other elves, strange magics that the elven spellcasters had never before seen. The Iynysyn used illusions and mental attacks, while
the Drow used such cunning subterfuge and certain magics that even their lowest warriors possessed! The war seemed hopeless, until something unexpected happened. The field of battle
was laid, with the elves hard pressed to defend themselves, when a horn of battle was heard from the west; A huge army of warriors, wizards, and priests charged the dark elven forces, turning the tide to victory for the gods of good.

The Drow ran for the caves they had hidden in
up until the war, and deeper still, into the very bowels of the earth. The Iynysyn found the deepest, darkest forest and hid there, where noone would find them for centuries to come. The other races, the humanoids, were scattered to the winds, unorganized and not as powerful or
intelligent as the dark elves. At this, a peace fell upon the land. The elves made pacts of friendship and peace with the humans, and built a city called Redforest at the edge of the plains where the humans had built their city, called Utar.

The gods had retreated, and Rial gathered
them together, even the Dark Gods, for such was his power. He said, "Enough damage has been done to the people of this world. No more shall we wage war upon Rialos. Henceforth, all gods are Immortal, and cannot be destroyed, not even by other gods." After that, the gods stopped
trying to influence each other, and began concentrating on Rialos. The gods of good saught to guide and aid the peoples of the world, including some of the humanoid races who had accepted them, such as the Dwarves and halflings. A thousand years passed in peace and prosperity, as
cities grew, kingdoms were formed, and new races came about by interbreeding with the old races. Things were quiet for a millenium, but only for that long.
