The history of Rialos is figured in Cycles. The current year is the ear 30, Fourth Cycle. Each Cycle starts over after one of the Drow Wars. Every thousand years or so, the Dark Elves emerge to conquer the surface kingdoms. So far, they've been repelled four times, but every time it seems a little bit harder, and things are a little bit closer. |
The
Second Cycle
At this time, the unthinkable happened. Even as the tales of the war were fading into obscurity, the Drow boiled forth from the dark again, seeking new allies. A kingdom in the northern desert, Al-Marosa, agreed to help them. They regrouped the Iynysyn and many humanoids, including the great barbarian Minotaurs, and attacked the kingdoms. Again, they would have been victorious, had it not been for one man. The gods saw the war, and realized what the dark gods had done. They had created a General for their armies this time, since they could not be there in person. One dark elf with more power than any other led the armies of evil in the war. To counter, the god of good created a man of great power, good and wisdom. They took a simple farmer and gave him great power, and the knowledge to use it wisely. He was called the Keeper. He took command of the armies of good, and led them to victory. The dark armies managed to destroy Utar before they were finally driven back, and lay a terrible curse on the ruins: anything that died there would be eternally tormented, and its body would be used to destroy those who were once allies. Even now the ruins are still known for the horrendous beings of evil that walk the ancient streets, and cower from the light of the sun in ancient ruins. Another curse was left on the land: Al-Marosa remained a city of evil, and continued to make war on Utar and Redforest. Scholars were so horrified by the war that they decided to begin counting the years again, starting over from 1. Thus the Cycles were born. In the meantime, the people of Utar rebuilt their city to the south of the old one. Two smaller cities were built as well: Telenar, the city of magic, and Omach, the city of the gods. The Academy of Wizards was established, and gained fame and prestige as an institute of learning. The Keeper retired to a lone tower in the eastern plains, where he awaited the gods need for him. It was unknown what had become of the Dark General. |
