ALL ARE THE PROPERTY OF PARAMOUNT STUDIOS.

Pakleds
Planet: name unspecified. A rotund, lethargic scavenger race who
nonetheless are not as simple as they seem: their "found" technology has
accelerated their abilities at a far faster rate than their understanding and
maturity can apparently handle. Little known to the Federation, the
Pakleds have met at least the Romulans, Klingons and Jarada; they are
so deceptive it is not clear if Sector 006 is truly "far from home" for them.
Their most striking features, aside from size, are bushy upswept brows,
heavily bagged eyes and a "dewlap" bottom lip. A trader ship of Pakleds
retrieved Lore from his purgatory of floating in space some two years after
Data threw him into a transporter beam to end their first encounter. One
group of Pakleds doesn't realize its ore mines on Kalla III are being mined
by the Duras sisters on stardate 47779.4.

The slow-witted traders often frequent Deep Space Nine. Quark says living
in Rom's messy quarters without Nog to clean up is like being a Pakled
refuse merchant.

Paradas
Planet: exact name unspecified. Humanoids with upswept, line-textured
faces and skin almost resembling some Terran mollusks or seashells. As
a species, they give off an odor from skin secretions which changes with
their mood; anger unleashes a particularly strong one. Their homeworld is
unspecified but is apparently neither Parada IV, a gas giant, nor Parada II
-- since the latter's significance was unknown to replicant Chief O'Brien,
who had access to the real chief's memory. The government and rebels
there had been locked in civil war for 12 years (since 2358) until they
asked for peace talks to be held at Deep Space Nine. Chief O'Brien had
been sent as a security liaison, but the Paradas government -- outwardly
paranoid about security arrangements -- had kidnapped him and tapped
his mind to direct the Replicant sent back to Deep Space Nine until it was
triggered to sabotage the talks. Part of the truce agreement was that
neither side carry on secret communications with the United Federation of
Planets arbiters, but an informant let the rebels know about the plot in time
to warn Commander Sisko's crew to keep tabs on the double, who was
unaware of his mission. Stability was apparently restored, for Paradans
continue to be frequent visitors to DS9.

parasite invaders
Source: extra-galactic to Milky Way. A never-named race of tiny,
crustacean-like intelligent beings who attempted to conquer the Federation
by infiltrating Starfleet and taking over the bodies of high-ranking officers in
2364, an effort halted by Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and exposed by
Adm.Norah Satie.

Paxans
Origin: Paxan space. Extremely xenophobic energy beings of superior
technology, capable of manipulating energy fields on many levels. They
can penetrate the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D shields even when form
and frequencies are varied, and inhabit another life form without danger to it
for communication. Their "wormhole" stun-trap keeps away most visitors or
robs their memory of the Paxans, but Lieutenant Commander Data's
positronic brain is unknown to them and they threaten destruction of the
U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D -- twice -- until Captain Picard convinces
them that their memories can be erased and Data agrees to share the
event with no one.

Pelians
Origin: Paxan space, Alpha Quadrant. Extremely xenophobic energy
beings of superior technology, capable of manipulating energy fields on
many levels. They could penetrate a Galaxy-class starship's shields even
when form and frequencies are varied, and inhabit another life form without
danger to it for communication. Their "wormhole" stun-trap kept away most
visitors or robbed their memory of contact, but Lieutenant Commander
Data's positronic brain was unknown to them and they threatened
destruction of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D -- twice -- until Captain
Picard convinced them that their memories could be erased and Data
agreed to share the event with no one.

Peljenites
Planet: name unspecified. A space-faring species, otherwise nondescript,
recently known to the United Federation of Planets whom Commander
Sisko convinced to try an exchange of ambassadors with the UFP in 2371.

Petrarians
Planet: name unspecified. A space-faring race known for skimping on
capital outlay and maintenance. Yates was in their employ when she and
Commander Sisko first met at Deep Space Nine, and she blamed her
initially outdated 15-year-old transporter model on them.

photonic aliens
Origin: photostar. Sentient energy beings which lived within a photostar
and were inadvertently taken aboard the Voyager in samples. They broke
confinement to find refuge in the Holodeck and took "prisoners" by way of
materializing the crew users there until ascertaining their "brethren" had
been set free.

Promellians
Planet: unknown. An extinct space-faring race, mutually destroyed with
the Menthar in the battle of Orelious IX over a thousand years ago (about
the time of Earth's late Middle Ages, circa 1300s). They were largely
humanoid oxygen-breathers and had a bony head-ridge much like the
Klingons. On stardate 43205.6 Captain Picard praised their bridge layout
as simple yet elegant and functional.

Prophets
Origin: Bajoran wormhole. According to Bajoran religious doctrines, the
prophets are the spiritual protectors and guides to the Bajoran peoples.
Throughout Bajoran history, several unusual objects referred to as "Orbs"
have found their way to Bajor, where they are traditionally considered to be
messages of wisdom from the prophets to the Bajoran people. There have
been nine orbs total, each associated with a unique and important aspect
of the Bajoran belief-system.

Providers
Planet: Triskelion. Members of a species who apparently were humanoid
in appearance, but eventually evolved into disembodied brains due to their
devotion to intellectual abilities. Three such disembodied brains dwelled
below the surface of the planet Triskelion, and control the events which
transpire on the surface of the planet for the purposes of their own
entertainment -- which is namely to capture humanoid species (termed
"thralls") for combative games so that the Provider's can wager on the
winners. On stardate 3211.7, Captain James Kirk and two of his crew were
captured in this manner.

Prytt Alliance
Planet: Kesprytt III. This humanoid people formed the minority and highly
xenophobic government of the Prytt Aliiance, led by a prime minister. By
2370 it had claimed Kolrod Island due to its initial disputed settlement, a
sore spot with the Kes, which led to Prytt's denial of membership by the
UFP.

Pygorians
Planet: name unspecified. A race which includes non-aligned arms
merchants, introduced to Maquis weapons buyer Sakonna via Quark.

Pythrons
Planet: Pythron V. A space-faring race.

Q™ Continuum
Origin: the Q Continuum. Super-race able to change matter to energy and
to suspend time, existing in a continuum of the limitless dimensions of the
galaxy; a dissident once claimed that h is brethren are not omnipotent, but
have sacrificed in their evolution their mortality, sense of purpose, desire
for change, and capacity for growth. Despite their advanced anture, the Q
at times have practiced captial punishment and life imprisonment,
especially to punish those who would leave the Continuum. The issue of
suicide, viewed as an interruption of their existence, prompted a civil war
between the more liberal and the staid Qs, seen as a series of galaxy-wide
supernova bursts in 2372. One of their kind, dubbed "Q," has several times
been an intruder amid human affairs, providing taunts and so-called tests
especially for the Starfleet crews of Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway.
His visits have changed the Q's perception of humanity from that of
savages to the tamer "unusual creatures" that in time will not be so limited
and will in fact surpass the Q -- thanks to the quality of "human
compulsion." Humans have twice affected Q affairs: when Janeway
decided the suicide issue and helped end the Q civil war. While visits from
the Q are problematic at best, not all are alike: the El-Aurian Guinan
advised Captain Picard, "Some are almost respectable." Q's home
dimension once tired at last of his meddling with lesser races and stripped
him of all power, granting him his choice of a mortal human form, until
offering to alow his return after an attempted self-sacrifice. Q says their
foreplay can last for decades; natives measure time in the billions of solar
years, such as 5 billion for the Female Q's age. The Continuum is "way
beyond sex," which is why Q searched out a human or other reproducible
species to mate with; even so, he designs a new form of copuation for his
wife and they bore a child.

Rakhari
Planet: Rakhar, Gamma Quadrant. Humanoid race distinguished by heavy
ridges down the nose and full heads of bushy hair. Aware and unafraid of
space-farers, they cared little about outside contact through the wormhole
and employed a swift and suspect justice system that wielded the death
penalty on not only lawbreakers but all of their relatives.

Ramatisians
Planet: Ramatis III. Humanoid inhabitants of a planet off the beaten
Federation path, whose ruling family line is missing its gene for
hearing_much like the Hanovers of Old Earth who suffered from
hemophilia.

Reegrunion
Planet: name unspecified. Species of illegal arms trader Plix Tixiplik.

Regulan blood worm
Origin: unspecified. This amorphous, pulpous creature rates such a low
status to the Klingon people, that name is used to insult people who are
thought to be weak. The Klingon, Korax uses this term to insult the U.S.S.
Enterprise at Deep Space Station K-7 in 2267.

Remmilians
Planet: Remmil VI. Sentient native species known to the Federation who
spin a crystalline webbing used in building construction, as seen used in
their central museum.

Repto-Humanoids
Planet: "Planet Hell" They can stand upright. Although they have a
skeletal system of a humanoid, they are cold blooded with a reptilian
epidermis. Their young hatch from eggs and thrive on the vapors of the
planet.

Rodulans
Creators of the Basotile, a type of centuries-old metal sculpture of which
Kivas Fajo owned the centuries-old first until his collection was broken up
after his arrest in 2366.

Romulans™
Planets: Romulus and Romii. Until stardate 1709.2 when the U.S.S.
Enterprise NCC-1701 under the command of Captain James Kirk had an
unfriendly run-in with a Romulan ship. Very little was known about the
species in general, although theories did exist. Although descended from
the same ancestors as are Vulcans, the Romulans are surprisingly
different than their distant cousins both in physiology and in behavioral
customs. Romulan technology includes the "cloaking device" allowing
them stealth and making them formidable opponents.

The physiology is subtly different from Vulcans, but enough so that
surgery on a severely injured Romulan is difficult for Dr. Crusher. Romulan
ribosomes apparently do not match those of humans or, surprisingly,
Vulcans -- but can match those of Klingons. The race still believes in
discarding genetically or physically inferior infants, and that it will conquer
the galaxy. They view the Federation as exploitative and short-sighted,
according to Jarok. Their metabolism -- or at least his -- appears to be
faster than human standard; the higher rate will help his treated skin burns
heal faster. Throughout their long history of war, Romulans have rarely
attacked first, opting instead to test their enemies' resolve -- a chess
game, Captain Picard calls it.

A very moral people with an absolute sense of right and wrong, enemy and
friend - a purposeful, passionate commitment a young Ensign DeSeve
found attractive when he defected but lost faith with over time. Many
ordinary Romulans, even those in the military, have horror stories about
treatment by the Tal Shiar -- a military service which appears to operate
above the standard empire.. Natives learn quickly to be secretive and not
to volunteer information. Women as well as men can climb high in both the
military and the Tal Shiar, as evidenced with Deanna Troi's capture on
stardate 46519.1 in which she posed as a Romulan from the Tal Shiar
successfully. Its leaders had no information about Klingon dishonor in
being captured, so Tokath thought he was being kind in letting the
Khitomer survivors be kept alive. A Romulan ship was shadowing the
competing Cardassians, Starfleet and Klingons all along in the race for the
last clues in Galen's ancient DNA puzzle.

The Romulans' preference for waiting and observing while other make the
first move would explain why they have never ventured into the Gamma
Quadrant. The species is made up of many varied skin tones, from a
yellow tinged to a dark brown. As a rule, they claim to have invented every
technological breakthrough before any other culture.

Romulans/2
In the mirror universe, the Romulans' poltical aliance and nautre is vague
but neutral: Sisko posing as his late counterpart says he'll try to get them
to support the Terran Rebellion.
Saataran
Planet: Sothis III. People who apparently hate mysteries.

Saltah`na
Origin: Gamma Quadrant. An ancient race (pronounced "sul-tu-NAW") that
was entirely destroyed by a massive power struggle. The events were
described in a telepathic archive contained in energy spheres that revealed
the story by superimposing the tale onto viewers' minds -- with usually
fatal results.

Satarrans
Planet: name unspecified. A race (pronounced "SUTT-er-uns") at war with
the Lysian Alliance for several decades, a length due to the relatively low
technology levels of both sides. Despite that, they have developed a
scanning beam that can blank memories via brain chemistry and
manipulate computers to the point where a native disguised as a human
almost hijacked the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D to win their war for
them. Whether a typical case or not, the Satarran, disguised as human,
can fake human readings on sensors and easily knocks Worf aside and is
only brought down after two phaser bursts followed by continuous fire from
two Phaser II's beams of unknown intensity. In appearance, they are
glimpsed as having a humanoid yet bony exoskeleton, although it is not
known how accurate that information is due to the camouflaged nature of
the one Satarran seen.

Scalosians
Planet: Scalos. Humanoids who exist in a hyper-accelerated state due to
overexposure to radiation.

Selay
Planet: Beta Renner. Reptiloid race inhabiting one of the two populated
worlds of Beta Renner. Tri-digited and of average height, they apparently
have a well-developed sense of smell. Their scaly skin fans up into a
cobra-like hood across the back of the head, and the official party of
ambassadors wears loose, flowing collared gowns. Though not a United
Federation of Planets member, the species has been involved in
interstellar travel for some time, at least since the 2320s if the one at
Farspace Station Earhart is any clue.

Serilians
Planet: Serilia (conjectured). A race, otherwise unspecified, whose
ambassador's impending visit to Deep Space Nine circa stardate 48423 is
the focus of security arrangements being made by Constable Odo.

shapeshifter
Another expression for CHANGLING. Before speaking of his illegal
cloaking device for sale in the bar, Quark knocks on everything solid in
view -- glasses, table, chairs, tray -- to make sure it's not a morphed
Constable Odo listening in.

Sheliak
Origin: Shelia star system. A technological, non-humanoid life-form of
classification R-3; in appearance, a wrap of black, mucous-secreting folds
appearing as at least a head and gesturing upper appendages (not too
unlike the look of the creature Armus on Vagra II). As a culture, they view
humans as a lower life form and have no qualms about exterminating those
legally in their way -- as with the unknowing human "trespassers" on Tau
Cygna V. They have learned several United Federation of Planets (UFP)
languages but still consider them imprecise. The Sheliak language
continues to elude Federation linguists, and even telepaths have been of
no help. In face-to-face dialogue with Captain Picard and Counselor Troi,
the Sheliak ship director speaks English without apparent translation aids.
His reception room is very large and open, perhaps indicating that space is
not critical on the vessel.

singularity aliens
A species from another time continuum which can assume other forms
and uses gravity wells as a nest for its young . Some mistook a Romulan
warp core's artificial quantum singularity as a nest, sent the Warbird into
distress, and then fractured time when the responding Galaxy-class
Enterprise's power transfer beam locked on.

Skrreea
Origin: Gamma Quadrant. A matriarchal humanoid Gamma Quadrant race
dominated for 800 years by the T-Rogorans and forced to work as laborers
and servants until the captors themselves were conquered by the
Dominion. In the vacuum that followed, some 3 million fled and -- through
one of their natives -- accidentally came through the wormhole to DS9 in
2370. The move appeared to fulfill a religious prophecy that their legendary
"promised land" of Kentanna lay just beyond, which they interpreted as
Bajor. When the overwhelmed Bajorans regretfully turned down their
request they bitterly settled on the nearby Draylon II, as suggested --
despite leader Haneek's argument that her hard-working people were just
what the rebuilding Bajor needed. Their language patterns, syntax and
sentence structure were unlike anything in the universal translator's
database. Males are considered "too emotional" to be leaders, always
fighting among themselves, and a female may be "bonded" to two or more
males; the concept of a solo mate is unknown to them.

species, budding
Planet: name unspecified. A sentient species which reproduces by
budding, apparently asexual -- otherwise nondescript except for the need
for a hatchling pond -- is represented in Starfleet and on Deep Space Nine
by Ensign Vilix'pran, who is reassigned away from the hazardous
materials of Cargo Inspection a month before the buds undergo hatching.

Subytt
Planet: Subytt. Name of a planet and the noun and adjective form for its
space-faring natives (pronounced "SUB-ite"), whose merchant fleet and are
among Deep Space Nine's callers.

symbionts, Trill*
Only 300 symbionts are available for hosting each year on average. If a
host is weak, the personality of the symbiont will overwhelm it. Unless its
current Joined HOST objects, a prospective Host may request a specific
symbiont.
