Just how Good is you Egyptian Knowledge?

Did you know: Amenhotep I did have a son (Named Rapses?) but the son died in infancy. The Pharoah had no other heirs, so when he died, he was succeded by one of his generals.

Did you know: The Eye of Ra is really called The Wedjet. It is a symbol of the power of creation and the all seeing power of the "almighty" god Ra. So in reality, Presley wears the Wedjet Amulet around his neck.

Did you know: Osiris, father of Horus, was supposidly the first man ever to be mummified.

Did you know: Hardly anyone in Ancient Egypt knew how to read and write, even most of the Pharoah's never learned how. The two occupations where you learned how to write was Priest or Scribe.

Did you know: The word Nefer means pretty, but a Nefer was also an ancient Egyptian amulet signifying happiness and good luck. It was made of red stone or red porcelain and was worn from a necklace or a string of beads.

Did you know: Anubis' actual job was that of the godly embalmer, and images of him cover ancient tombs to ensure that the Egyptian spirits pass onto the next life.

Did you know: Only those who could afford servants while alive were allowed to have Shabties placed in their tombs when the died.

Did you know: Egypt's name isn't really Egypt! The name Egypt was given to the country by the Greeks after the downfall of Dynastic Egypt. From there, it travelled to Europe, and finally over here. The real name that was given to Egypt and is still in use today is Misr.

Unusually enough, this happens to lots of countries all over the world, including Finland and Switzerland.

Did you know: Only 4% of Egypt can be used for farming

Did you know: There are two main parts of Egypt. The first one, covering the Nile River and Delta is called Kemet, meaning " The Black Land." The rest of it ie. The desert, is called Doshrit, meaning " The Red Land."

Did you know: The Nile floods every year, covering the Kemet lands and replenishing them with 40 million tons of silt, a nutrience-rick topsoil. It flooded so precicely, that Egyptians set their calendars to it.

Did you know: The word Pharoah translates as " Royal House."

Did you know: By studying mummified remains of Egyptians, paleoanthropologists have discovered that Egyptians were the first people to do surgery.

Did you know: The Nile is the longest river in the entire world! It's 4000 miles (6400 km) long!

Did you know: The Egyptian calendar was divided into three sections- Akhit: When the Nile flodded, Perit: The immergence of fields, and Chemou: The drought.

Did you know: Mummifying a person took about 70 days, but the body's last for thousands of years! They have found mummies that are over five thousand years old.

Did you know: The Pharaoh Akhentaton didn't believe in all the Egyptian gods, he just believed in one, the Sun god Ra which he renamed Aten. He hoped to influence his country to believe in Aten as well, but when he died, his beliefs went with him.

Did you know: Tutankhamen wasn't the Pharoah's real name. His father Akhentaton had originally named him Tutankaten, after the sun god that he had believed in. After his death, priests and administrators thought it best that he change his name to Tutankhamen, after Amen, the god of Thebes.

Did you know: When you were 12-13 years old, you were considered and adult.

Did you know: Egyptians were excellent gardeners, and ironically enough, the Nile looks like a flower with it's petals spread at the top.

Did you know: If you did any harm to a mummy or dead body, in Egypt, others had the right to shame you for the rest of your life.

Did you know: The Egyptians had a game similar to checkers and chess. It was called Draughts and had thirty squares on the playing board.

Did you know: All Egyptians were clean shaven, including their scalps, even Egyptian women. When you saw Egyptians with hair, they were almost always wearing a wig.

Did you know: All Pharaohs and only pharaohs were allowed to wear the fake beard of Egypt. Most of the time, even female pharaohs wore it, because it told the world that this was the king/queen of their country. So how does Scarab get away with wearing the fake beard?

Did you know: The pyramids are very amazing, but not very well thought out. Pyramids were built as burial chambers for pharaohs, to keep their bodies and grave goods safe. But, being as big as they were, grave robbers could see them easily. It was almost like having a neon sign with the words " Come And Rob Me!" on it.

Did you know: Real mummies are wrapped with over ten layers of linen when being embalmed.

Did you know: Tombs were always placed on the western side of the Nile, so that when the sun rose, the light would pass through the doorways, and illuminate the room.

Did you know: The most important god to the Egyptians was Osiris, because he chose whether you had an afterlife, or was eaten by Ammut.

Did you know: Ammut was originally a goddess!

Did you know: The Egyptians invented the calendar.

Did You Know: The writers made a mistake, Sekhmet's animal sign is a lioness NOT a vulture

Did You Know: Set's animal sign is a boar

Did You Know: Like real people, Gods were married (Ptah to Sekhmet, or Isis to Oris) They also had sons and daughters (ex Horus Isis, Seth are all children of Geb and Nut, or Nefertum son to Sekhmet)

The goddess Hathor is ACTUALLY Sekhmet. Hathor can turn into Sekhmet

Sekhmet means powerful female or mighty one GIRL POWER!!!

  • 1st water turned to blood
  • 2st frogs
  • 3rd lice
  • 4th flies
  • 5th cattle died
  • 6th boils
  • 7th hail
  • 8th locusts
  • 9th darkness
  • 10th death of the first born
  • Did You Know: The Average Egyptian man was only about 5 feet tall!

    Did You Know: a Spinx was a mythical creature that had the body of a lion and the head of another animal- not necessarily a human.

    Did You Know: The Pharaoh Ramses ll ("Ramses the Great") was the oldest Pharaoh in history. He died when he was 90 years old!

    Did You Know: The last Pharaoh, Cleopatra, wasn't Egyptian, she was Greek

    Did You Know: Tutankhamon is such a famous name because his tomb was the only Pharaoh's tomb in history that archeologists found in tact.

    Did You Know: In 905bc, Egypt was conquered by the Libyans, who took over the role of government

    Did You Know: A group of Egyptian tombs is called a Necropolis

    Did You Know: The Egyptians didn't know about the arch, so in every one of their temples, they have huge columns every eight feet or so to hold up their great stone roofs.

    Did You Know: Archeologists had to actually move an Egyptian temple up a mountain so that it wouldn't be lost when they build the Aswan High Dam in 1960.

    Did You Know: After building the dam, the Nile no longer floods yearly

    Did You Know: Present day Nubia is Sudan

    Did You Know: You can date Egyptian Artifacts by when they captured Nubia. Before Nubia was part of Egypt, the country had very little gold.

    Did You Know: There were a group of people called the Hittites, and they invaded Egypt in the Middle Kingdom for about 200 years. They introduced them to the chariot and a better bow and arrow.

    Did You Know: Amenhotep lV and Akenaten are the same guy!

    Did You know: The Egyptians thought that the world was a flat disc, and that when the sun set, it was actually going underneath them in one large circle.

    Did You Know: The Collapse of Egypt happened in 405 bc, when Alexander the Great conquered it, and made it part of the Macedonian/Greek Empire.

    Did You Know: Egypt was conquered about six times before the Romans came.

    Did You Know: The inside of an Egyptian temple was called a hypostyle hall, meaning "Under Column."

    Did You Know: Pharaoh Amenhotep died in 1524 bc (Only 1 year after the murder of Rapses in the show).

    Did You Know: In the old kingdom, a Pharaoh by the name of Menes united Upper and Lower Egypt

    Did You Know: Pharaoh Djozer was the man that invented the pyramid. It was called a step pyramid, and it was created in 2060 bc.

    Did You Know: The largest pyramid at Giza is the pyramid of the Pharaoh Khufu. Beside it is the pyramid of his son Kahfre, and his son's looks bigger because it's on higher ground.

    Did You Know: The famous Sphinx has the face of the Pharaoh Kahfre

    Did You Know: They think that there may be a hidden complartment in the body of the Spinx.

    Did You Know: Some people believe that Tut was murdered

    Did You Know: The man that found Tut's tomb was Howard Carter, and he was hired by a man named Lord Canarvon.

    Did You Know: After the opening of Tut's tomb, many strange things occured afterwards:

  • A cobra (The sign of upper Egypt) came into Carters house and ate his pet canary
  • Vultures (The sigh of lower Egypt) circled around the archeologists all day.
  • Lord Canarvon became ill on his way to Cairo- He died only 2 weeks later of blood poisoning.
  • At the exact moment that Canarvon died, all the electricity in Cairo went out
  • Did You Know: The only wonders of the world that are still standing are the pyramids of Giza.

    Did You Know: The word hyroglyph means "Sacred Writing". It's a greek word, and was given it's name because of all the hyroglyphs on their temples.

    Did You Know: Everyone in Egypt had a statue of the cat goddess Bastet in their homes, for good luck and happiness.

    Did You Know: Osiris is sometimes shown with bulls horns and is colored a deep green, signifying that he's the god of agriculture.

    Did You Know: When mummifying a body, a priest would wear the mask of Anubis to help the ka finds it's way to the afterlife, and to praise the jakal god.

    Did You Know: The average lifespan of an Egyptian was around 45-52 years of age

    Did You Know: there are many reasons for the collapse of Egypt's Empire:

  • Many weak Pharaohs after 1500 bc.
  • Hired mercenaries were taking over
  • The iron age had begun- egypt had none
  • Attacks from the delta brought the armies away from other borders- Palestine, Nubia and Syria broke away
  • Discontentment among the government
  • The want of separate city states drove nobles to turn against each other
  • Did You Know: The Greeks borrowed the Egyptian way of art

    Did You Know: The egyptians didn't know how to show depth in their art, so they used frontality- Front view for the eyes and chest, and side view for the arms and legs.

    Did You Know: The only period in Egyptian history when realism was used, was when Amenhotep lV rules. The style was called the Amarna style, and it showed informal poses and realism.

    Did You Know: Egyptians trained lion, tiger, leopards etc. to fight in their battles and wars.

    Did You Know: The first non-Egyptian Pharaoh's name was Ptolemy. He was a greek general and he ruled in 905 bc.

    Did You Know: Tutankhamen was married and had two children

    Did You Know: When Tutankhamen died, he was buried with his two daughters

    Did You Know: Soon after Tut died, his wife disappeared

    Did You Know: His wife was one of the daughters of Akhentaton

    Did You Know: Apep was a real person

    Did You Know: Amenhotep fought both against the Hyksos in the area now known as Israel, and in Nubia, the area now called the Sudan.

    Did You Know: When Amenhotep died, he had no living son to replace him on the throne, so it passed on to Thutmose, his brother-in-law.

    Did You Know: "Heka" is an ancient Egyptian word meaning "magic."

    Did You Know: Ammut was actually the most terrifying god in Egyptian mythology

    Did You Know: Ammut is always shown in Egyptian art by Anubis's side

    Did You Know: The Egyptian symbol for "soul" was "Ka", and it was depicted as two arms joined together.

    Did You Know: In Ancient Egypt the pun was considered a form of spell, language itself was magic and to make a pun was to endow one thing with the power of another. So many of the corny jokes in the show would be regarded as high sorcerey to the ancient Egyptians!

    Did You Know: To become a scribe, it took years and years of repeditive writing to learn all the hyroglyphs. But as well as that, scribes also had to be drawn into their proffessions, so everyday while they worked, they each had to chant a line such as, " Being a scribe is a good life. Why would I want to be a soldier, walking all day, eating rotten food and getting hot? Education is good and it is cool..."

    Did you Know: Ramses is supposidly the Pharaoh depicted in the Exodus.

    Did You know: The first photographs taken of the inside of King Tut's tomb were by Lord Canarvon's daughter minutes after the tomb was opened.

    Did You Know: We would not know what Egyptian Hieroglyphics mean today if it wasn't for the Rosetta Stone. A piece of flat stone with hieroglyphic, Hieratic and Greek writing. Through the Greek writing, the missing pieces of the puzzle were filled in, and today scientists and Egyptologists know which symbols stand for what.
