MUSEUM ("cochise")


   For a long
time the cochise
   lived on wild plants
      pemmican and

   dried roots

left just these
   grinding tools for
   vegetables
      choppers of
   quartzite

they offered the
dead
   bluebird feathers

later these
   chipping tools
flint
   spears a
      copper dagger

    firearms
finally an apache
      poker case

      the cards
      made of

   human skin

MUSEUM ("small babies")


   2 small babies
held in
         dryness

they found these mummies in a
         limestone cave

         born in
         New mexico around the
         time of
         Beowulf

one's buried on a cradle board of
      peeled twigs

      straps hold the body in a cocoon of
         yucca and cotton
         and small ears of corn

3 pieces of pottery as a burial
      offering

         the blue
         clay jars

      bigger than the baby
