District 3 Speakers sweep Regional Contests

Valley members see winning speeches
of Brian Cavanaugh and Frank Switzer

Frank Switzer reaches
a point in his speech
where he feverously
appeals to backsliding
Toastmasters to return
to the fold of decent
manual-giving
meeting-attending
members.

Valley Toastmasters hosted guest speakers Brian Cavanaugh, ATM, the District 3 Spring Speech Contest winner, and Frank Switzer, the District 3 Humorous Speech contest winner, so they could practice their regional contest presentations. Several members then had the opportunity to evaluate their speeches before before they went to the Region III Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Brian and Frank competed at the regional level on June 27-28.

Each won his respective contest! Consequently all of Valley's members had a chance to see the speech which would win the International Region III Contest.

The Humorous Contest ends at the regional level, however, the other does not.

Brian will now compete for the World Championship of Pubic Speaking at the International Convention in New Orleans, on Saturday, August 23. 1997.

He will be the first District 3 Toastmaster to compete at the International level since 1982 when Len Baker, ATM, a member of the Park Central club placed Third. A Tempe Toastmaster, Joel Weldon, who is now a nationally known speaker and sales trainer placed Second in the mid 1970's.
