Hello everyone! The Friend Family is an Air Force Family! My hubby, Drew, has been in the military for almost 16 years and for 10 of that we have been married.
The first base we were assigned to as a couple was Seymour Johnson Air Force Base located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. We started out in a tiny "hole in the wall" trailer. To describe it, words fail me. We knew it was getting unbearable when one night our couch went through the floor! It was extremely cheap rent and we were waiting base housing availability so we stuck it out. It was also located in a terrible area, with trailer parks on each side of us, each boasting a murder!
Right after I moved in with Drew, he had to leave for Desert Storm (December 26,1990). Because we had just gotten engaged, I had no authority to get on the base. I traveled 5 days a week to Raleigh, which was over a 60 mile drive, to work at North Carolina State University. I began wedding plans in the middle of the war, not even knowing if and when there would be an end to it!
We planned the wedding for July 20, as it fell during my parents' vacation time and we felt maybe by then Drew would be home! He got back from Saudi the end of May, which left us about a month together to prepare.
We stayed in North Carolina for 6+ years. We made some wonderful, lasting friendships in our final home in Goldsboro our three oldest children were born in the base hospital.
In early 1996, we found out Drew was "hot" for a remote assignment and sure enough, said assignment was bestowed upon us. We left Goldsboro, North Carolina in September 1996. The kids and I stayed with my family in Ohio while Drew went to Korea. As anyone who's been through a remote before knows, it is an experience that is extremely hard to describe. And, I honestly feel it will do one of two things to a marriage, pull a couple apart or bring them even closer together. We were blessed enough that for us, it only proved our desire to be together more as a family.
Drew returned from the remote assignment in October 1997 and we had follow-on orders to the base where we currently reside, Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico. When we first arrived, it was difficult being so far from everyone we know and love and it's definitely a completely different way of life out west for us easterners! However, we have found that people from this area are some of the friendliest we've met. We have made some terrific friends here and the kids' love their school!
Anyhow, that's about it for now. I'll try to update this page as much as possible. I'm very interested in others who've had similar experiences so drop us a line!
