The following is a reduced-size copy of the marriage bond for Thomas Bastin and Louanna Shofner. Thomas was born in Caswell County, NC and died in Metcalfe County, KY. Thomas served in the Union Army with three of his sons, and with his friend D.W. Smith. During the Civil War, Thomas had an arm amputated by a cannonball. In spite of this injury, he lived for many more years. According to several family letters describing him, he was a large, jolly man.
Thomas and Louanna Bastin were the parents of William M. Bastin , and Richard Emory Bastin . (Thomas and Louanna (Shofner) Bastin are identified by name on William's death certificate.)
