History of 3777 and Cassoday Area

A Vigilance Committee was formed during 1860's gold rush days near Virginia City,Alder Gulch, and Nevada City, Montana, to help rid the area of claim jumpers and highwaymen. The numbers were part of the Committee's calling card. One theory, meant if they didnt change their ways they had only one way out of town...3ft by 7ft by 77inches, measurements of a Vigilante grave.

Virginia City, MT Boot Hill. Four graves are located there... The "Plummer Gang". Frank Parrish, Jack Gallager, Hayes Lyons and the infamous "Clubfoot" George Lane. These Highwaymen found out on January 14,1864 just what the 3-7-77 meant. The leader, Henry Plummer is buried in Alder Gulch, not far from Virginia City.
The Montana Committee only lasted til mid 1864, desolved as the emergence of Formal Judicial systems took over the territory. However...
These numbers are still seen along some the highways in Montana., On the uniform patches, badges, and sides of cars, of the Montana Highway Patrol as a sign of law and order.

Rodeo and the Western lifestyle are a huge part of me. When I was growin up my family was always involved in Rodeo in one sort or another. That's why the Backround color of this page is Casey Tibbs purple.
Was raised around the likes of Shawn Davis, Benny and John Reynolds, PRCA rodeo champs that lived near my hometown in Montana. My Dad was a rodeo clown for many years at the smaller rodeos up home. Both my brothers tried their hand at the rough stock and I still get out and team pen once in awhile.

CASSODAY,KS

Although I live in the "Flat Land" I do enjoy the FlintHills near my home. Rolling hills and huge pastures with Bluestem grass to ride in, the view from some is breath taking.
But, my roots and my heart will always be in the Montana Rockies where I was raised.

Cassoday is a very small town found right on the Kansas turnpike. Population normaly runs about 95, but if ya count all the dogs it peaks out at about 120.
Known as "The Prairie Chicken Capitol of the World", it draws alot of hunters and sightseers trying to catch a glimpse of this fast flying, prairie drummin little bird.

Cassoday was also a place for all the ranches in the area who would gather their cattle off the plains, to meet and then drive the massive herds on to the rail heads in Abilene or Kansas City. The "Baazar Cattle Pens" just NE of Cassoday are still used for this purpose.
There are signs right on the turnpike that read, "Where have all the Cowboys gone?...Cassoday, Ks."
Instead of horses lining Cassoday's main street nowdays, its cattle trucks, pickups with horse trailers, bicycles, and motorcycles.(horse power of another kind. btw.. Did I mention I like Harley's too!!)
Its a place rich in history and good folks. Good food too, ya gotta hit the cafe here, the hub of the town. Once a month Bikers from all over converge on this little town for an out of this world buffet breakfast. Lots of pictures of the people and area can be found inside the cafe and ya never know what might be happening at the"bull Pen", the mornin coffee chat table!! I have always liked living in or near a small towns.
