We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results.

Let's start with my name.  My white name is Roberta. My Eskimo name is Aklaq (the grizzly bear).  I am an Inupiat Eskimo from Alaska.  I was born and raised in the mountains north of Fairbanks.  I am only 1/2 Eskimo. My mother was a full blooded Inupiat from the Icy Cape area. My father was a white man from Illinois.
My ancestors were the Angakoks.  These were the Medicine People.  This part of my culture ended with my grandparents, when the missionaries came to the frozen north and "converted" what they saw as "heathens".
However, of late, this calling has reimerged.  That is the path I am taking.   It is one constant learning ground.  You can read about how I came to follow this path in the sections below. They are divided chronologically. Please feel free to enter and learn how sometimes this path is shown.
