Technology rules the
world!
In
late the 19th century, music entered into an
industrial era. At this time, the music sheet was
the most efficiant commercial tool. However,
people had to buy a concert ticket to hear their
favorite artist. Then began the development of
new technologies to make music more accessible.
Many
technologies of that time were invented in Canada.
Bell invented the telephone and the wax cylinder.
Berliner invented the microphone, the plate disk,
and the gramophone. Bell also created the first
recording company in the world.
However,
the radio is responsible for music being brought
to the mass population. The radio offered free
entertainment to the population. It's popularity
quickly raised the music sheet as a marketing
tool. During the second world war, the radio was
known for repending american music worldwide.
Following
this war, new technologies were invented, such as
the tape recorder, records, and television. The
musical industry became a growing mass industry.
Then arrived the first independant producers.
They were the first ones to use the overdubb
technique. The tape recorder permitted them to
record a more detailed and efficiant song. The
producer's role had changed the musical
industries face as well. Television permitted
showing what the artist looked like, it allowed
artists such as, Elvis and The Beatles to become
very popular.
These
days, the industry is in another technology
revolution. The computer takes more and more
space in the domain, and the old methods are
being replaced by new ones. Other possibilities
are offered to us, but we will have to make an
adjustment. Then we see artists of a new
generation who want to promote themselves, and be
independant from the big recording companies.
