Erica and Dimitri divorced again after she found out he had slept with Maria Grey and she was carrying her husband's child. Erica was so distraught over Dimitri's infedility and the loss of her unborn child that she trapped Maria in the hunting lodge to get her to confess her sin. Maria went into labor and Erica had to deliver the baby. Erica wanted to get the baby to the hospital as soon as possible and didn't get to tell Maria that she had a girl. Erica proceeded to drive the newborn to the hospital, but the weather was extremely inclement. Erica lost control of her car and ended up in the river. Erica was found and rushed to the hospital, but not the baby. Maria, Edmund and Jack searched for the baby. Erica left the hospital and found a trailer home near the place where she had crashed. Erica found the baby in a trailer home with a woman named Esther Glynn. She convinced the woman who was leary about giving the baby to Erica that she was the mother. Erica had every intention of giving Maria back her baby, but when she went to Wildwind to do just that she overheard Maria and Dimitri talking. Dimitri told Maria that perhaps it was a good thing that the baby didn't make it. Erica was not only shocked by this, but by the fact that Maria did not respond to his remark. Erica took the baby and named it Sonia Kane and came up with a phony adoption story. Months and her situation in a bigger, complicated mess than she ever dreamed; Erica came to terms with the fact that Sonia belonged with her real mother. As much as it pained her to let go of a little girl she had grown to love so much, Erica did the right thing and returned Sonia to Edmund and Maria. That night Jack spent the night and the two made love which marked a new beginning in their relationship. But when Jack found out that Erica had kept Maria's child he was furious. Being the district attorney Jack was forced to bring criminal charges against Erica. Erica hired Trevor Dillon as her attorney. Erica believed that Jack would let Trevor win the case. She was wrong. Jack told Erica that he would be setting the wrong example for Lily if he didn't pay for his mistakes. Erica took his advice to heart and before the jury was allowed to read the verdict Erica changed her plea to guilty. She was sentenced to a year in county lockup plus two years probation. During that time Jack kept in contact with her and the two grew closer than ever. Erica realized that Jack was it for her. If being in jail wasn't bad enough, Erica received the most hearbreaking news of her life when she learned that her daughter Bianca had anorexia. Travis allowed Bianca to stay in Pine Valley with her Uncle Jack so she could get the treatment she needed to get better. Erica was released from prison on Christmas Eve thanks to an unlikely person, Edmund who convinced the parole board that Erica was rectifying herself for what she had done. Erica was now free to help her daughter recover from such a horrible disease and to be with her true love.
