Rollin', Bumpin', Rollin'...

All Aboard and grab the dramamine! The Land itself reminded me of Gilligan's Island, and the water is a romantic dream: baracuda, pink octopus, LSU tiger colored fishies, HUGE starfish, gorgeous but scary eels, you-name-it. And sailing out to La Gonave was also a romantic scene -- although sleeping in the hull was clostrophobic. Nothing quite like being rocked to sleep in the Carribean. The roads were great for balancing exercises -- and if you dared to sit, you got a great bum massage, and a numb-bum many hours later!

The people and their traditions were a whole different story. Ra-Ra parades (an extention of voo-doo) are frequent at Easter time -- just when we were there. And we thought Mardi Gras in New Orleans was something? Imagine THOUSANDS of people gathered in the road with candles and alcohol, banging on their bongos, dancing like mad-men, and chanting at the top of their lungs. Indiscreet women and carefree men shouted their Haitian curse words flippantly. Our truck could barely move with all of the inebriated Hatians thrashing against the hood and the sides. At these gatherings, it is lawful for you to kill people who you have a grudge against -- without officers interfering! Men carried machetes in their unstable hands...I was hoping that none of them had anything against me!
