TREKKING IN TIKAL
"the place where spirit voices are heard"

Climbing up into the sun oh, the grandeza of creation

A visit to Guatemala to see the Mayan ruins is worth it even if you're not at all interested!

The majestic Mayan temples and ruins are small cities that were once crawling with thousands of little Mayan people who worshipped a pantheon of nature gods, including those of the sun, the moon, rain, and corn. They aspired to build awe inspiring lime-stone temples to be closer to their gods -- pyramids which are even taller than the surrounding jungle itself (we're talking 212 feet! See the pic above?)! I've never seen anything like what I saw in Tikal -- and I've seen lots of spectacular things around the world.

And, check this out! 'They' say that only 15% of the ruins are excavated!!! So, you can walk off the trodden path, and pretend like you're making your own discoveries -- and you are! You can see stuff that hasn't been touched by archaeologists yet (ok, maybe touched). Grab a-hold of the roots and vines around the unexcavated temple bases and climb up to see the sights. It's amazing. Truly.

And the lovely wildlife -- don't forget to look UP! There are more than 250 different species of birds, a variety of monkeys laughing at you, and some sort of creature that looks like an ardvark or ant-eater or something! Watch for jaguars, too! COOL!
