Presque Isle Light is located in a beautiful state park in Erie Pennsylvania, on the north shore of Presque Isle. Construction began in September 1872 and was completed in July 1873. Initially the tower was 40 feet but in August 1896 a project to increase the tower to 57 feet was begun to enhance the visibility of the light from the lake. Attached to the tower is a ten-room residence that retains much of the original architectural character. Modern conveniences were added in later years. The oil room, later the battery room, at the base of the stairway, was used to store a one night supply of oil for the lamp. Keepers kept a night-long vigil to ensure continuous flashing of the light for the heavy lake traffic of the 1800's. This light is at the end of a short pier on Presque Isle Park. There is a pretty view of the harbor from this pier. This sandstone tower was built in town on the mainland to replace the original 1819 light on Presque Isle Peninsula, which sunk into the ground because of a layer of quicksand far below it. You can see Erie Pierhead Light from the banks in Dunn Park, where the lighthouse is located. This light is the only lighthouse in the world ever to have been lighted with natural gas. The lighthouse is now a private residence. Dunkirk Lighthouse is a privately owned lighthouse run by volunteers. Built in 1875 it is the 2nd lighthouse to be built here. The original was built approximately 50 yards away. The view overlooks Lake Erie and on a clear night you can see the lights from the Canadian Lighthouses. The shoreline is eroding and the government isn't willing to spend the money to keep the shoreline from eroding. One of the volunteers has moved the fence 3 times in the past 10 years. The trees that are there now he figures, will be gone by next year if something isn't done to prevent the erosion. The keeper's house is the current home of the Veteran Park Museum ![]()
