![]() | Split Rock Lighthouse is located on a cliff nearly 170 feet above Lake Superior (near Duluth Minnesota). It was built in 1910 as a reaction to a disatrous and deadly winter storm. Five years earlier, 31 ore boats and freighters, and dozens of crewmen were killed when an unanticipated blizzard hit the area. Split Rock Light is unusual, being a complete 20th century light station, with a tower, keeper's house, fog signal building and oil house. The light was deactivated in 1969. Today it is the focal point of a State Park, northeast of Duluth on Highway 61. The height of this Light gives you a spectacular view of Lake Superior.
