 | Outer Banks LighthousesThe ocean has claimed more than 2 thousand ships since the time of Colonial America, but even with the presence of numerous lighthouses did not prevent the dangerous stretch of coastline along the Outer Banks from being dubbed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic. The lower coastline of the south requires higher towers to make the light visible far out at sea, compared to the North, where lighthouses could be built atop the elevated rocky shore. The Currituck Lighthouse in Corolla, NC is an important lighthouse. It was built in 1874 to light the one remaining dark stretch off the south Atlantic coast. This lighthouse was deemed essential in helping southbound vessels that saied close to the shore to avoid the dangers of the north-flowing Gulf stream. Bodie Island Lighthouse is located at Cape Hatteras national Seashore, Oregon Inlet, NC. This lighthouse is the third one built on this site. The first tilted out of alignment, the second fell victim to Confederate explosives. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the United States, at a height of 208 ft, and guardian of the most dangerous stretch of the southern coast. It was considered the most important lighthouse in the 19th century. The beach is eroding near this lighthouse. Funding is being sought to move the lighthouse. The very first lighthouse in the Ocracoke area was built in 1798 near the spot once inhabited by the notorious pirate Blackbeard. A second lighthouse was destroyed by lightning in 1818. The existing tower has stood since 1823 making it one of the oldest active lights of the south east coast. Ocracoke Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in the United States.
