Lighthouses
For thousands of years, lighthouses have been the beacons for those who traveled by water. Ships sailing on oceans, lakes and rivers needed guidance to find their way around dangerous rocks, sandbars, and ports. The first beacons were bonfires on hills, thus the next step was to raise the beacons up. The oldest lighthouses were simple structures topped with bonfires. These were built as early as the 7th century B.C. along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Early U.S. Lighthouse Service keepers were required to "keep the light burning" from sunset until sunrise during the shipping season, April through November, the keepers were paid a total of $520 per year for 365 days of service.

Lighthouses have fascinated me ever since I saw my first one, Assateague Light, Virginia. I hope you enjoy your visit with me. Just click below to see some beautiful pictures of lighthouses. They have been divided by region.
