A major flaw in the gene seed is that marines, as they grow older, spend more time in solitude, meditating for days at a time. They turn more and more inwards and become quite antisocial, rarely talking to anybody except brother marines, and never to anyone who is not a marine. Perhaps talking to other marines from other chapters, and perhaps not. In a way becoming detached from everyday concerns. It is not unknown for a marine to go into the sus-an state.
The fortress is a giant ship that is never in a fixed location. The Space Bears basically recruit from four worlds, [one hive world, three feral worlds], but have been known to recruit people up as and when they need them. Each of the basic four worlds has a fortress-monastery, which a single bear stationed there.
The chapter has deviated from the Codex Astartes quite a bit, notably by the design of the companies, painting and marking their armour, and more by their knowledge of Chaos.
Chapters have considered it heresy to know about chaos except by chaplains, librarians etc. But the Space Bears allow a marine who has fought against chaos, if cleansed [not honorable euthanasia, or mind wiping] are offered to choose between mind wiping or being allowed to keep the memory. If they keep the memory they are allowed to display on their armour a sign to show their purity, however in the terminator armour it has been known to put the device of chaos on a shoulder plates a sign, [however it has been found that brothers who remain the memory sometimes go berserk in battle when facing chaos again so the signs are always regarded with respect and a little worry].
During crusades the whole fortress will move into the area of battles and the whole chapter will join in. For short campaigns only, single bears are often the battle group.
