is a song which has enjoyed three lives, and after more than fifty years it remains a song loved by Vietnamese everywhere. Van Cao's first version was written in 1942; another romantic lyric was written by Van Cao's friend Pham Duy. Van Cao, Pham Duy, together with Do Huu Ich, were three young minstrels who shared songs in Hanoi and Haiphong during those years of change. Van Cao also authored another version of Ben Xuan after the August 1945 revolution (Dan Chim Viet). Five decades on, arists like Cao Minh, Ai Van and Bich Lien continue to bring new meaning to this classic of Vietnamese popular music.
