Sephiroth stood watching the group in the moonlight as they came toward the seaport town of Galeen. A glint of metal made him tense, his mako made emerald eyes watching as Cloud and his band of fighters-Tifa, Red XII and Barrett entered the Inn below.

“Do you realize how easy it would be to destroy them mother?” he gripped his sword in one hand tightly, his silver hair blowing in long strands in the wind.

He wore a long black trenchcoat and underneath that, a matching black shirt with lace that crossed his broad chest. He glanced to the side as leaves rustled, but no one was there. Slowly, he touched the chain on his neck where a small white stone lay roped within. Anger welled within him as he remembered.

“Do you realize how easy it would be to destroy them Sashta?”

***

Few people had known about her and even fewer would ever record her name in the books of great battles and histories. He would never forget her. Sashta had been assigned with him to a mission in Nhbelium and they had met for the first time on a train.

“Sashta Relenia.”

Sephiroth looked away from Cloud up at the girl who stood before him. Her hair was dark, almost a black and roped into a ponytail. Her eyes were bright blue, like the ocean, and her hand was outstretched toward him. From her side, dangled a sword almost equal in length with his.

“Sephiroth.” He rose and took her hand, smiling as she returned his grip firmly. She wore all black and from a chain on her neck, hung a white stone held in place by looped black cord.

“Is that for luck?” he asked.

“Sort of.”

“I’ll be in the other room.” Cloud stood, nodded in her direction and left them.

They had talked together for awhile about past assignments, and she laughed when he told her about the time he had to round up a pack of wandering chocobos. Finally, they reached their destination.

From that day on, his life had changed both for the good and the worse. He had gone with her and the others to the Mako Reactor, where he found other soldiers like himself immersed in mako. In the central pod, he found Jenova, the name of his mother.

***

Sephiroth caressed the glass tenderly, then smashed it open, tearing the mask from his mother’s face. The sound of wires tearing from her and disconnecting sent a thrill down his spine. Far below, somewhere on the metal landing, Cloud tended to Tifa, who he had thrown across the room earlier as she tried to stop him from reaching his mother. Sephiroth narrowed his eyes and turned around slowly as another presence entered the chamber.

“Sephiroth.”

Sashta stood, legs wide in a defensive stance, her sword locked to her chest. “Don’t.”

Something inside of him said for him to leave the madness let the past alone, but he had to discover who he was. Was he really human or something else created from the Mako energy he had been subjected to when he was younger. Jenova’s voice taunted him in his mind. “Will you let that little wench stop you? We have greater plans you and I.” Sephiroth laughed, his voice echoing in the chamber.

“You can’t stop me. I am the Chosen one.”

Sashta took a step forward and then was knocked aside as Tifa ran up the steps past her. “You bastard! You betrayed my father!”

“Tifa no!” yelled Cloud.

Tifa charged up the stairs toward Sephiroth, who only smirked. “Fool.” He raised his sword, dropping the mask of Jenova to the floor. The blade descended on Tifa who weakly tried to block the blow. Instead of flesh, his blade met with steel. Tifa cowered beneath the two swords and Sephiroth locked gazes with Sashta.

“Tifa run.” hissed Sashta.

Tifa scrambled backwards, then down the steps to cower behind one of the pods with Cloud.

Sashta’s sword was locked tight with Sephiroth’s and in his eyes, she saw him hesitate. She pushed him backward and he tried to regain his balance.

Memories flooded through his mind of the nights they had spent together talking. On the first night, he had leaned over and kissed her and she had not resisted. They seemed like they had known each other for eternity.

Now, he stepped away from her and lowered his sword. “Go, before it’s too late.” His eyes, the strange emerald, shimmered in the dark.

“Sephiroth wait!” she stepped toward him and stopped as the mad glitter came into his eyes again.

“The world shall be mine.” He whispered, his face contorting between anger and sorrow as he stared back at her. “I am the Chosen. I know the truth now.”

“Jenova can’t be your mother, you’re human!”

Sephiroth stepped forward and placed a hand to the side of her face, his sword in the other. “But she can be.” He whirled away and disappeared into the darkness. She whispered into the dark-“Don’t go, I love you.”

Sashta had tracked him across the country, followed close behind by Cloud and his fighters. Finally, she had him cornered in an old church....

Sephiroth knelt beside the altar and lit one of the stubby candles. He set it in the candleholder, its light gleaming on his face. The flame flickered.

“Sephiroth.”

It had only been whispered, but it echoed loudly in the church, causing the birds in the rafters to flutter away. He closed his eyes and turned around to face the open doorway.

Sashta stood there, a gushing rain had began to fall and her hair was plastered to her skull. Her sword dropped to the floor, as she clutched one arm, the blood seeping through a makeshift bandage.

“Please don’t run this time.” She staggered over to him and clutched at his trench. He grasped her, pulling her to her feet. He held her trembling form. She pressed her face into his chest, sobbing and wrapped her arms around him. Slowly, he returned her embrace.

“I don’t care who you are, I don’t care where you go, I won’t leave you.” She sobbed softly.

He pulled her closer and buried his face in her soaked hair and sighed. For once, the madness cleared and he was the Sephiroth he used to be, a soldier yes, but one capable of feeling, not the bloodthirsty god he was trying to become.

“Get out of the way Sashta! Once and for all this ends!”

Sephiroth released her as she spun around to face the open door. Cloud strode forward, his sword ready. Sephiroth unsheathed his and grabbed Sashta’s shirt, pushing her behind him.

“No!” she screamed as the two charged each other, their swords clashing. She stumbled to the door and grabbed her sword from between the boards.

“Sashta!”

She turned to stare up at Tifa, her eyes wide in shock. Behind her, Red XII and Barrett stood, staring at the fight brewing behind her. She pushed away from them and slashed at the broken benches that were in her way. Sephiroth was enraged, hacking at Cloud viciously. Cloud leaped away, grinning.

I’ve gained power since last we met.”

He bowed his head and muttered a few words, then charged Sephiroth again, casting the spell. “Death!” Sashta recognized the spell and flung herself between them. Cloud’s form blazed green as he roared at her, only to realize too late who she was.

Cloud’s blade slammed into her chest and exited out her back as he stumbled away. The blade continued to blaze green as the electric charge burned through her body, making her convulse. Sephiroth stared in horror as she collapsed. He raced to her side and knelt down to her, ignoring the stunned Cloud.

Blood dribbled from her mouth onto the boards below, the sword still protruding from her body. Sephiroth ripped it out and tossed it away.

“Sashta, oh god, Sashta why did you have to be so damn stubborn!” he clutched her hands in his and weakly she squeezed back.

“I’m sorry.”

He hugged her to him and rocked back and forth, a tightness in his chest that he had never felt before. She rested against him and whispered something.

“What did you say?”

“Promise me, promise me you’ll not finish the fight. Don’t let me….*choke* die for nothing.”

Sephiroth looked up and only Tifa remained. Her eyes were filled with tears and her hands were clasped at her chest. She caught him staring at her and raced out the door back down the hill where they had appeared. Sephiroth looked back down at her.

“I promise and one day….we shall be together once more-in a different time.”

She pulled something from beneath her shirt and pressed it into the palm of his hand, then closed her eyes. More blood seeped from her mouth, but she whispered “I love you.” He caught his breath. “I love you too.” She took one more breath and then no more.

He had buried her there outside the church and then screamed in fury at the night sky. All this time wasted! He had stormed after the group then, their muddy boot prints leading back to Galeen where he now stood.

“Only because of our promise Sashta.”

The lights went out in the Inn as Cloud and his fellow fighters went to sleep. One person opened the door and stared up in his direction. Tifa bowed her head and turned to go inside, shutting the door behind her.

Sephiroth knew she had seen him standing there, sword drawn and silhouetted in the moonlight. He spun away from the town, his hand still clenching Sashta’s necklace.

“Only for you.”

Some Thoughts

First off, I’d like to say that I haven’t yet finished the game, but the scene with Sephiroth in the chamber with his mother was in the game. Right now, I’m only at the part where the gang-Cloud etc. are in the desert. It’s a prison and is just after the part at the Golden Saucer where you pick up Cait Sith. I apologize to everyone because I know that the story doesn’t have anything to do with the game really. I hope that it was okay. I’m my own worst critic! If you would let me know if you liked it, I’d really, really appreciate it. I never would have thought about writing a story like this, but all the awesome fanfics on this web page inspired me!

Sephiroth, Cloud and all the other FFVII characters are the property of yada, yada, yada. The only character that’s not theirs is Sashta, which I created.
