At one booth at the street fair, medical students were soliciting passers-by for blood samples. They particularly wanted Japanese nationals because they were testing for DNA. After being assured he couldn't get AIDS, Yoichi finally agreed (see photo on the right) and got paid $25 for his donation!
Yoichi, C.A., and their friend Ron--an ESL instructor at Yoichi's school--went out to eat a few times. Yoichi had a chance to try all kinds of food including Thai and Mexican. Here he is having his first pastrami sandwich.
Yoichi Itagaki, former Heidelberg College Japan student, is now living in Los Angeles. He is attending Los Angeles City College where he plans to major in filmmaking after he completes his ESL requirements. You see him on the left standing in front of his apartment.
On the right is Yoichi in his room in an apartment he shares with a British roommate who is a naturalized American. It's much more spacious than what he had in Japan but farther from the school so he has to take a bus. He tried walking home from school the first week or so, but it took nearly an hour--which may be why he's so thin in these pictures.
C.A. Edington, ESL Director at HCJ, visited Yoichi in August. (on the left in front of his aparment). While she was there, they went to a street festival where Yoichi was astonished at seeing so many gay couples. They also visited Japan town where he loaded up on Japanese manga.
He enjoyed it so much that he ate the whole thing and part of C.A.'s! (It was a change from his usual diet of rice, raw egg, and celery.)
Yoichi doesn't have e-mail yet but if you e-mail him through Heidelberg, we'll make sure he gets your message.
