KASTLE GREENS GOLF CLUB (11446 Rogues Road, Midland, VA ~ (540) 788-3144: Fauquier County's newest golf course opened in 1998. It features an 18 hole championship course with a links-style front nine and a plantation-style back nine. This public course is open 7 days a week. Kastle Greens charges $47 weekends with a cart, $34 Friday until 2:00 p.m. and $29.00 at twilight. There is also a driving range, pro shop and grill and bar.
PRINCE WILLIAM GOLF COURSE (Nokesville, VA ~ (703) 754-7111): On Route 215 just beyond the county line, Prince William features an 18 hole course open to the public. An 18 hole round costs $20.00 Monday - Thursday, $30.00 Friday and $39.00 on the weekend. With a cart, the rates are $29.00 Monday-Thursday, $39.00 Friday and $48.00 on the weekend. The course also contains a driving range and a practice putting green.

NATURE WALKS
STATE ARBORETUM OF VIRGINIA (Boyce, VA) ~ (540) 837-1758, ext. 21) Walking tours beginning at the Visitors Pavilion near the main parking area the first Saturday of each month, March through November. The tours will focus on seasonal interests. The Arboretum offers diverse habitats, including wood lots, open meadows and wetlands which attract a variety of species. The Arboretum has the largest concentration of bluebirds in North America. Since 1990 volunteers have erected and maintained over 100 bluebird houses. The tour is free and reservations are not required.
VINT HILL FARMS PARK (Vint Hill Station, VA) Located at Routes 215 and 652, offers hiking and nature trails, plus picnic facilities on its 14 acres.
AIR SHOW ~ THE FLYING CIRCUS

Located 14 miles south of Warrenton, the Flying Circus offers an Air Show and open cockpit biplane rides (before and after the show). There's comedy flying, biplane formations, sky diving (and a Hot Air Balloon Festival the 3rd Weekend in August). Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the 200 acre wooded picnic area, a small gift shop and a hanger loaded with relics from "The Good Old Days." The field opens at 11:00 a.m. and showtime is at 2:30 p.m. Adults $10.00, children 3-12 $3.00 and under 3 years old free. Special group rates available.

LAKE BRITTLE Off Route 29, New Baltimore, VA ~ (540) 349-1253 or (540) 899-4169 Lake Brittle dates back to the early 1950's. It is located on South Run in Fauquier County. This 77-acre lake was the very first lake built in Virginia with tax dollars from the sale of fishing tackle. It has a good redear sunfish population with fish averaging close to a half a pound. It also has a strong walleye population. Channel catfish average just under two pounds and largemouth bass average two and a half pounds. Currently there is a 12-15 inch slot limit on largemouth bass. Flathead catfish were stocked in 1990 to help reduce forage fish and bullhead populations. Anglers are encouraged to release flatheads. The lake has fish attractors that are marked by buoys. It also has a good boat ramp and fishing pier which are open 24 hours. There is a concession which provides rental boats, electric motors, bait, tackle, beverages and snacks from March to October.
GERMANTOWN LAKE (Fauquier County ~ Call Fauquier County Parks & Recreation (540) 788-4867) This 109-acre lake is located in C.M. Crockett Park in Fauquier County. From Warrenton, exit Route 29 onto Route 643 (Meetze Road), go seven miles south to Route 602 and turn right. The lake contains largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and channel catfish. There are boat and motor rentals as well as a concessionaire offering bait, soft drinks and food. A daily entrance fee is charged. There is a boat dock, a handicapped accessible fishing pier and restrooms. Picnic tables, grills and a shelter are among other amenities.
PHELPS POND (Fauquier County) This pond is in the Phelps Wildlife Management area in Fauquier County. It has largemouth bass, bluegill, redear and channel catfish populations. The highlight here is the redear population, with recent surveys having yielded citation fish. The parking area is approximately one-quarter mile from the pond, and only carry-in boats are allowed. There is no boat ramp. Take Route 17 north From Fredricksburg, turn left (west) on Route 651. Or, take Route 651 south from Route 29 at Remington.
LAKE MANASSAS (Manassas, VA ~ (703) 754-8181) Lake Manassas is an 800-acre water supply reservoir serving the City of Manassas. The lake has big crappies (both white and black) and Spring fishing for them is very good. There are good populations of largemouth bass and walleye, and some nice smallmouth are taken each year in the upper lake (Broad Run). The largemouth bass population ranked in the district top three with Burke and Occoquan out of eight Northern Virginia impoundments surveyed in 1997 and 1998 with electrofishing gear. Channel catfish are abundant, and the lake also has a burgeonong carp population. A concessionaire provides rental boats, electric motors, bait, snacks and beverages. From Route 29 take Route 215 east to Route 604 north.
PELHAM RESERVOIR (Culpeper ~ (540) 825-4772 weekdays or (540) 825-0444 weekends for permits) Pelham is a water supply reservoir for the Town of Culpeper which covers 255 acres, with a combination of forested and open sloped banks along its shores. If you like crappie and channel catfish, Pelham is the place to go. This reservoir probably has more channel catfish per acre than any other lake in Northern Virginia. Other species include largemouth bass, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish. The lake has a new public ramp on Henretty Drive off Mountain Run Road (Route 718) from Route 29 south of Culpeper. Electric motors only are allowed, and a permit is required.
MOUNTAIN RUN (Culpeper ~ (540) 825-4772 weekedays or (540) 825-0444 for permits) Mountain Run is another water supply reservoir near Culpeper, located just above Pelham Reservoir. It's a 75 acre lake with wooded shores. Largemouth bass provide good fishing here, and there are also crappies, bluegill, channel catfish and an excellent redear sunfish population. Mountain Run has a very nice boat ramp with a courtesy pier. There is limited shore fishing. A picnic shelter and playground are in the park adjacent to the lake. Permits required.
LAKE THOMPSON (Markham, VA) Lake Thompson is a 10 acre lake in the G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area (Fauquier). Smallmouth bass, bluegills, redear sunfish and channel catfish are available. Catchable rainbow and brown trout are stocked annually from November to April. A trout license is required in addition to a fishing license. From the parking lot it's about a 1/2 mile walk to the lake which has a number of open, flat, grassy areas from which to fish. Canoes or small boats must be carried in. From Route 66 take Route 688 at Markham, north to the second parking area on the left.
HUNTING
CHESTER F. PHELPS & G. R. THOMPSON WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS Licenses required and may be obtained from the clerk of the Circuit Court, as well as many hardware and sporting goods stores. There are restrictions on hunting and recreational shooting in Fauquier County. To operate a firearm, you must take a hunting safety course offered throughout the year by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
