| Danny Boy does it all for Jayhawks Few gave Kansas a chance in the championship game of the 1988 NCAA basketball tournament, as the Jayhawks were facing an athletic Oklahoma squad that beat them twice during Big Eight conference play. But KU was led by Danny Manning, who, throughout the tournament, willed his team to victory. Not since Larry Bird guided Indiana State in 1979 had a college basketball player put a team on his shoulders in such fashion. And against the stunned Sooners, Manning saved his finest for last — a 31-point, 18-rebound, five-steal effort that led the Jayhawks to an 83-79 victory. As heroic as Manning's play was, the Kansas victory would not have been possible without Larry Brown. The well-travelled coach was at his best on this night, getting the most out of his players and game-planning masterfully.
