OLYMPIC GAMES SPOTLIGHT
Miracle workers

I'm in my early thirties, and I've long said that the
United States hockey team's victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics is the most important sporting event in my lifetime. The tremendous upset lifted the spirit of an entire nation.
I still remember the stories about people in their cars pulling to the side of the road, honking their horns and getting out to dance and cheer at the news of the victory.
At the time, the economy was slumping, and the hostages were in Iran. But the kids on the ice re-affirmed the power of American dedication and hard work at a time their country desperately needed a pick-me-up.

Sports Illustrated named the team Sportsmen of the Year for 1980, and the title of the accompanying story was most appropriate: "A Reminder Of What We Can Be."
Yes, we will always believe in miracles: The 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team celebrates its stunning medal-round victory against the Soviet Union.
