Providing safe outdoor recreation is the most enjoyable mission of the NRD.  The NRD includes recreation on flood control and channel improvement
projects, and contributes to creating greenspace in the urban areas.
Flood control is the number one priority of the NRD.  Approximately 40% of the FY05 NRD budget is dedicated to flood control to protect life and property in the flood prone Papio watershed.
Sediment and erosion control projects continue to improve water quality in area lakes.  Soil and water conservation measures implemented on rural land contributes to the overall water quality of the area.
The NRD and  City of Omaha partnered to develop Miller's Landing Park. The park includes a Lewis & Clark interpretive trail and park shelters.  Riverboat cruises are available at Miller's Landing.
A 3-mile trail segment from N.P. Dodge Park north to the Washington County line is currently in the design phase.  When completed, the trail will connect  the downtown riverfront area to Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge near Ft. Calhoun. In the meantime, enjoy a fall drive on the scenic River Road from the Mormon Bridge, off I-680, north out of Omaha to the Boyer Chute NWR.
