" In a dangerously competitive and cruel world, if we remain passive spectators, then we will not get anything. Let us use the power of the pen to silence the enemy, and demand our piece of cake "

Hi Folks!

I suggest that each of us get into the habit of writing letters to newspapers, magazines, MPs,ministers and all such individuals and institutions that contribute toward building opinions and making decisions about our state.

1. Counter the propaganda against the state by means of facts and figures.

(a) If somebody says that Laloo Prasad Yadav has nine children, then say that B. Shankaranand has ten children. Note that it is a verifiable fact. (Don’t think that I am Laloo’s admirer or Shankaranand’s enemy.) The late S. Nijalingappa had/has about nine children while P.V. Narasimha Rao has at least seven.

(b) While despising Bihar, the English newspapers invariably quote V.S. Naipaul who said something abominable about Bihar. Hit back at those newspapers, and ask why they don’t quote Naipaul while dealing with secularism. (Naipaul endorses BJP’s opinion when it comes to secularism.) Using one man’s statement to establish one’s bias and discarding the same man’s statement that is otherwise inconvenient is a piece of cunning.

(c) If people talk about a large number of Bihari
migrants to Delhi and other cities, then ask why they remain quiet about millions of illegal Bangladeshis all over the country. It is perfectly legal for a man to move from on part of his country to another while it is patently outrageous to tolerate illegal immigrants who have been systematically eating up the resources of the country.

(d) Justice Ramaswamy has the dubious distinction of having been declared corrupt by his brother judges. Indeed, the man was subjected to impeachment in the Lok Sabha, that of course failed. Ramaswamy is not a Bihari! Jayalalitha is yet another example of a non-Bihari CM who was convicted by a court of law.

(e) The number of crimes in Delhi far exceeds that in entire Bihar, if only people have the patience to examine the figures.

(f) For every problem that exists in Bihar, there exists a similar problem in a number of other states. If only you read newspapers (freely available on the internet), you will get numerous examples. Build a database.

2. The governments at the center have been systematically cheating Bihar in a number of ways. A small state of Assam today boasts of two central universities and an IIT while Bihar has none at all. Credit goes to ULFA. The collective population of the seven states in the North East is smaller than that of (divided) Bihar, yet Bihar has never been on the agenda of the union government when it comes to establishing institutions of national importance. There are at least five central universities in the North East, and four in Delhi alone. University of Roorkee has already been converted into an IIT while BCE Patna/Bhagalpur remains as neglected as ever. Why? Institutions of (inter)national importance may not immediately eradicate illiteracy or poverty in a state, yet they contribute to the growth in profound ways. In particular, they lend a status to a state that alone is of great importance.

3. Places like Bodhgaya and Bihar School of Yoga at Munger are known all over the world. Even die-hard Bihar-haters visit these places of pilgrimage. We cannot ask for another Bodhgaya, but we can certainly try for another school of Yoga.

4. When it comes to asking for grants for West Bengal, people like Mamata Banarjee and Somnath Chatterjee speak in unison. Alas, that is not the case with respect to MPs from Bihar. Indeed, Mamata Banerjee proudly presented a Bangla budget when she was the railway minister while Nitish Kumar remains as muted as ever.

5. Bihar is one of the few states from which rank outsiders like Madhu Limaye, George Fernandes and Inder Gujral got elected to the parliament. Even today, people like Kapil Sibal and S.S. Ahluwalia have been enjoying the luxury of Rajya Sabha from Bihar. Can you imagine CPM leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet reaching parliament via Kolkata?

6. We are living in a dangerously competitive and cruel world. If we remain passive spectators, then we will not get anything. Let us use the power of the pen to silence the enemy, and demand our piece of cake.

Jai Bihar! Jai Hind!
