Avengers #43
(August 2001)

Title: Global Presence
Story: Kurt Busiek
Art: Alan Davis/Mark Farmer/Tom Smith

Summary: The Avengers split into three teams to address disparate threats that have arisen since Kang's arrival on Earth. One team, led by Capt. America is investigating the return of the Presence in Russia. The Wasp commands a team in Canada that is repelling the attack of Atlantis' forces which are under the leadership of Attuma. In China, Warbird leads a team of her own comprised of She-Hulk, Vision, Silverclaw, and Black Widow. They face the Deviant army who are vying for territory as outlined by Kang last issue. As Warbird's unit forces back the Deviants, the Vision checks in on Warbird. He is concerned about how she is handling the sudden appearance of the Scarlet Centurion an incarnation of Marcus Immortus, the man who kidnapped and raped Carol years earlier. As Carol begrudgingly admits the effect that seeing Marcus again has had on her, her team is drawn underground and surrounded by the entire Deviant army!

NOTE: Leadership has been something that Busiek has been building Carol up to for a while now. In this issue, she is handed leadership of this sub-group of Avengers despite the presence of the more seasoned Vision and former chairperson, the Black Widow.
