Waxing philosophical, waning intellectual
When is Braintree live next?
- Who knows? I don't.

Lyrics...

  [ away tonight ]

It's not enough to believe
In what you're leaving, receiving
Never enough to be there
For your good times, your goodbyes
It'll never be the same
Within you, without you
It'll never be the same
In your mind, in due time

Take it all away tonight
We will see that innocence
Is everything we'll never find
And nothing to the lost

Steal away through the night
And let it go
Steal away through the night
And let it go

Strip it all away tonight
We will see that innocence
Is everything we'll never find
And nothing to those who have it

Social scars and fogged-up cars
For everyone within earshot
Telephones and traffic cones
Can disappear in a tear drop raze

The future comes to you

Away tonight
We will see that innocence
Is everything we'll never find
Away tonight
We will see that innocence
Is everything we'll never find

Away tonight (x4)

The story...

"'Tonight' was written from a fairly fragile state of mind I was in when my friends were all graduating high school and I wasn't. I had a pretty hard time with keeping myself challenged enough to keep going day in and day out, and ultimately I ended up not graduating in four years because of it. Still, the song focuses on everyone's fear of the future at that point in time, and makes it more or less a universal experience beyond just a graduation song. It could be any point in time where everything's changing for you, and actually I wrote this a year before I moved down to Boston and it applied more then than it did when I wrote it. I remember playing it at parties all that summer after graduation and it being received very well, it seemed to really hit home with people. Its first real performance was at the acoustic show I did with Alex back in 2002 on my birthday."
