Educational & Reference Links

Where to find what you're looking for is often quite challenging.  Will I need a book, a magazine or journal, newspaper articles, can I find it on the internet?  Where should I look?  The first step to find ing your way is to formulate very specific questions you need to answer.  Once you have defined your research question(s), you will be better able to look in the right place(s).  If you're feeling confused, drop by the main counter and speak to me about your project.

At Immaculata, we have an OPAC, an Online Public Access Catalogue, which has records of most of the books and some of the other materials in our library-resource centre.  That's usually a good place to begin, but it doesn't always yield the information you need.  Subject headings, subject keywords - what's the difference?  If you feel you've done the best you can at searching the catalogue and still can't find what you need, drop by the front desk.  We may not always answer your question directly, but we will attempt to point you in the right direction.

Many reference materials have been digitized and made available online.  At Immaculata we offer access to reference materials online through our subscription to bigchalk Library Canada and is available to the Immaculata community members. It offers access to more than 1,200 magazines, newspapers, books, transcripts, maps, images, web links, and audio/video titles. It may be searched using natural language, similar to searching the web, however there are many more features. Please contact Ms. Camardo for further details.

To access it from school go to http://library.bigchalk.ca

From home go to http://library.bigchalk.ca/remote

ENCYCLOPEDIAS

I usually recommend encyclopedias as a good place to begin looking for general information.  In the library we have sets of encyclopedias in both English and French.  There are also encyclopedias available online.

The Canadian Encyclopedia is available for free, online at http://www.histori.ca/ which is a website dedicated to Canadian history education.  L'Encyclopédie canadienne est aussi disponible à ce même site web.
bigchalk Library Canada contains encyclopedia articles which are searchable on the computer.  For access see the info here...
