Thai Cuisine
Although
not in the same league as Bangkok, typical Thai street food is abundant almost
everywhere. Unlike other regions in Thailand, due to the higher ethnic mix
of Malays and Chinese, Thai food in Hatyai reflects all this diversity. A
dish very typical of the South is kaeng tai pla, a very hot curry made with
fish stomach, green beans, pickled bamboo shoots and potato. The Chinese dish
of thin rice noodles knowns as khanom chin appears here in a spicy fish curry
sauce, serve with cucumber, pineapple , pickled cabbage and other fruits and
vegetables. Roti, a round flat wheat bread popular with the Malays, is a real
southern flavourite, totally assimilated into the local culture.

Seafood
Thailand
is famous for it's seafood. Due to it’s proximity to the coastline along the
southern peninsula, fishing boats bring in crabs, fish, lobsters, giant prawns,
scallops, mussels, shrimps and squids. All these are often prepared simply
by steaming, frying, or more elaborately by cooking in a clay pot. Not to
be missed are the open-air seafood restaurants like Tha-Lay Thai where the
seafood are displayed openly for your selection, and you can instruct them
how to prepare your seafood to your likings. .

Vegetarian Cuisine
Thailand
is not known for its vegetarian fare, but getting meatless foods there is
much easier than you might think. Amid the ubiquitous chicken, fish and tiger
prawn entrees is a host of vegetarian opportunities waiting to be discovered..
Lots of people assume that since Thailand is mostly Buddhist that vegetarianism
is common among the people. However, Theravada Buddhism does not prohibit
or even discourage the eating of meat except as a voluntary ascetic practice.
For a vegetarian, one Thai phase that you must know is "pom kin tae pak",
which means “I eat only vegetables.” Women say dee chan instead of pom.
