Telecommunication

Prepaid phone card in thailand requires registration which you can do so in 7-11 convenient stores. Alternatively, you can still get it from mobile telephone stalls or shops. Starter pack is the cheapest for DTAC and ORANGE, but GSM AIS 1-2-TALK provide the best coverage.

Calling mobile numbers will require either +66 or add 0 at the front of the number. Local land line will require to add 74 at the front of the number.

The new phone numbering system for Thai handphones takes effect from 1 Sept 2006 Callers to mobile phones now should start dialling "08", followed by the existing eight-digit number, as the new national numbering plan takes effect today. For example, mobile phone numbers that start with "01" should be switched to an "081" prefix. The number (01) 234 5678 becomes (081) 234 5678. Callers from abroad will have to add "8" after Thailand's "66" country code. For example, +668-1234 5678 would replace +66-1234 5678. However, callers have until November 30 to get used to the new cellular dialling scheme. From December 1, only the 10-digit mobile-phone numbers will be valid. Fixed-line telephone numbers remain the same.

Problems of Overstaying Beyond Your Visa

Foreigners who overstayed in Thailand whether intentionally or unintentionally, often take the situation lightly thinking that it is only a matter of paying the penalty of 500 Baht a day. In normal cases, when a person who overstayed surrenders to the Immigration Office or upon exit, he or she will be fined 500 Baht per day for each day overstayed up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht.

However, it is important to remember that if your visa has expired even for just one day, and you do not surrender but are apprehended by immigration officials or the police, you will automatically be taken to court. If your court hearing is held by a Friday and you pay your fine the same day, in accordance with the court order, it does not mean that your case has ended. The Immigration Bureau still has to pursue your case by deporting you directly back to your home country So unless you are a Malaysian, you will need to have a confirmed air ticket together with sufficient money for transportation to the airport. If you cannot meet those requirements, you will be detained in the Immigration Bureau jail until you are able to acquire a confirmed ticket and sufficient cash for the trip to the airport.

If your court hearing is not completed by Friday afternoon, other problems will arise, even when you have everything you need for your departure from Thailand. You will be remanded by the Immigration Bureau until your court hearing ends unless you have a friend or a representative (e.g., a lawyer) who can make the necessary arrangements to post your bail. Now, the worst case would be that foreigners who are apprehended for overstaying their visas may be sent to the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok. If that occurs, its good luck to you as you have have a whole new set of problems so do bear in mind the risks of overstaying.

What To Do If You Lose Your Passort

Your passport is a very important document. If you are traveling only in Hatyai City, it is advisable that you keep your passport in the room safe or with the hotel reception.

If you lose your passport, it is important that you immediately report the loss to the Tourist Police Station or to the nearest police station in the area where you lost your passport. You will be issued with a report document that must be presented at your embassy or consulate for the issuance of a new passport or travel document. Your embassy or consulate may require the report document to be officially translated into English as the report is in the Thai language. You will also need the report document for subsequent immigration procedures.

If your country has no consulate in Songkha, you will need to go to Bangkok where your embassy or consulate is. If your country has no embassy or consulate in Thailand, you need to go to the Passport Division of the Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok to obtain a travel document that will enable you to return home.

After receiving your new passport or travel document, you must go to the Thailand Immigration Office either in Bangkok or Hatyai, depending on your location of disembarkation, to have a visa stamped in it. You must have a photocopy of the police report document to present it to the Immigration Office. If you need to overstay your visa in Thailand to complete the necessary procedure to obtain a new passport or travel document, you may be exempt from penalty. However you must present a supporting letter from the consulate of your country to the Immigration Bureau before a decision can be made concerning your eligibility for exemption from penalty. No fee is charged for the immigration procedure. The normal penalty for overstaying a visa is 500 Baht per day, but not exceeding 20,000 Baht.
