P u r p o s e O f L i f e by Poetic_Justice; submitted on 13-Mar-02 in Life category Average Rating: 4.22 (23 Votes) Have you ever asked yourself what is the purpose of life? Why are we here? Why are you on this planet, waking up everyday to go to work, school, or just hanging around, meeting new people, nice or arrogant people, having fun with your family and friends, spending time with the person you love... I don't want to know what religion you are or what God you believe in, if you do. I just want to know your opinion, your views. I do believe there is a purpose to life. Don't you think this is horrible when we have to sit here everyday hearing, watching, or reading the news that says: "2 kids aged of five and seven years old have been murdered in a small town called St-John" or "A man killed himself today after killing his wife"? When I hear that, I ask myself: In what kind of world am I living? There are so many injustice such as discrimination, all kind of discrimination. However, there are also injustice like, for example, kids dying of cancer or people who wake up one day and realize that they lost everything... What inspired me to write this is that question someone, a suicidal friend of mine, asked me one day: "Jenny, what is the purpose of life?" I've read somewhere, from a french author called Jean- Paul Sartre, something that says: "When we were born, freedom has been given to us as a gift". Yes, we were free. But the author also said:"However, we became slaves of that liberty". That's why there are so many unhappy, desperate, suicidal persons who doesn't know how to deal with that freedom. All I can say is that the most beautiful feeling is love. The most touching words someone could possibly tell us is: I love you. The nicest gift we would like to receive many times a day, every hours, every moment is love. The most beautiful masterpiece you've seen in your life was inspired by love. The cure that could heal anything is love. The most powerful thing in the world is...love. But the hardest thing is also to love. Truly love. I've been thinking. I've been thinking too much. And I came up with an answer: I believe that the purpose of life is to love yourself and love each others. Each one of us. Unconditional love is the best kind of love. Love with sacrifices. That's why it is so hard. Do you love? Do you know how to love? True love and true friendship is doing beautiful and difficult things together. Love is such a strong word when you mean it. Everyday is a new day. Everyday, I wake up and I learn how to love. Because unconditional love is not something we are used to. Loving each other is not only looking at each others in the eyes but in the same direction. Love and you will see what the purpose of life is. C o m m e n t s Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! by Brendatredway on 30-Sep-02 at 12:53 AM Wonderful insight. I loved reading your wisom. Keep up the good work and write some more. Brendatredway __________________________________________________________________________________ Excellent wisdom... by JenniferOliver on 26-Apr-02 at 08:03 AM From the moment we realize the finality of death, we all ask ourselves this question. I find the meaning of life in so many things day to day, it's hard to keep track. Unconditional love is one of those reasons. We make the most out of each day to make the most out of life. Thank you for a thought-provoking pearl and congratulations on being featured in the Pearl of the Day! Blessings, Jennifer _________________________________________________________________________________ what insight you have by meadow on 25-Mar-02 at 07:16 PM for one so young. Keep on believing ... and make a mark in your world. It obvious you are! I like your thoughts on freedom. All through history it shows a sad reality, people long to be free, but when they are given real freedom, most people are afraid of the responsibility that comes with it and end up back in bondage. Great pearl! __________________________________________________________________________________ Welcome! by grammy47 on 24-Mar-02 at 09:56 PM "God is love." Without Him-there is no love. He is pure love. Our purpose is to worship Him and let His love flow through us to others. He is our Creator. You are a wise young woman and you are on the "right track." __________________________________________________________________________________ Jenny, you are as beautiful by sommer on 23-Mar-02 at 09:14 AM on the outside as you are inside. If I was a betting person, I would wager that 99.9% of the members of Pearl Soup have given a lot of thought to the "Why are we (or more specifically...why am I here?" question. I've been asking myself that since I have been, at least, 13 years old, and that's far too many years ago than I'm willing to admit! Over the years, I have come to believe in a concept called Karma. As my limited understanding of this concept is, it is not retribution of wrongs, but more like "balancing." I have come to believe that all of what we call "bad things that happen to good people" are choices that our souls make before we enter this incarnation. I know many, more spiritually connected, people may have a different view. This is mine. You've written a beautiful thought provoking Pearl! __________________________________________________________________________________ Jenny, by Pampatt on 21-Mar-02 at 07:14 PM I tend to agree with many of the comments. This is probably one of the oldest and most consistent questions of life. Redshift is right that we all think about it whether we admit it or not. What is the meaning of life? For me? Right now? I look around and say.. "my kids, my grandsons, the love we all share, the time we have together." Ten years or 20 years ago I might have given you a different answer. Who knows, ten years from now I might think differently. Possibly the meaning of life is how we live it, each of us, day to day. The way we live each day, the way we love or laugh or cry... our day to day interaction is what gives our lives meaning. Pam __________________________________________________________________________________ Poetic Justice: by Pasius on 21-Mar-02 at 05:18 PM This is a wonderful peice. I enjoyed reading it, although some gramatical errors, but very good for a fluent french speaker ^_- "What is the meening of life?" A question I find myself asking all the time. In my opinion. Nothing. there is no meening of life. We are here, because we have evolved, like everything from bacteria or some tiny molecule. But, as a human, I have a hard time accepting that. I believe the meening of life is different for everyone. It varies for everyone. The meening of life for you may be love, for another could be to survive, and for another, to finish school, or to be all they can be. It is to each their own. Simply my opinion. I enjoyed this peice. Keep it up ^_^ _________________________________________________________________________________ Do you know how to love? by Minamarie on 16-Mar-02 at 07:17 AM poetic justice.... All of use ponder our purpose from time to time. To say we don't is hypocritical. However, I think the most valuable wisdom you have imparted is the questions of "Do you know how to love? " If we did, you are correct in saying....would we do the horrible, ugly, and even violent things he do to one another? For most love - the unconditional kind is found in our spirituality, our faith. And that is why when the world looks like it has gone crazy, we run to our God of worship. I think it's a tragedy that we don't love our God consistently as is deserved. Good, thought provoking essay! Minamarie _________________________________________________________________________________ Hi, Jenny. by Redshift on 13-Mar-02 at 02:29 PM That's my wife's name so I find it easy to say. You ask the question that is on every mind. Every mind simply does not say it openly, though it is the most burning question there is. Unfortunately I believe many use all manner of beliefs and experiences to quiet the voice of that question much the same way we take pain killers for a tooth ache. You mentioned Jean-Paul Sartre. At his life's end he died as one tortured because that question was not answered to his satisfaction. Welcome to PearlSoup. |
