This pearl is SPECTACULAR. What else can I say? Indifference is truly worse than hate...totally harmful.

GREAT write.

I loved it! It is a timely pearl! Poetic Justice!!! by Minamarie on 27-Sep-02 at 09:04 PM
"Indifference is when you walk down the streets, you meet a poor man asking you for money and you pretend to not hear him. "

It seems in our own quest for keeping 'the waters' smooth-- we neglect to recognize that not helping someone now could turn into a rip tide later on...

Making a difference for even one person is earning ultimate jewels in our heavenly crowns!

I applaud your youthful exuberance and maturity in recognizing something that many of us don't get until we are middle aged!

Excellent writing!

This is very good. by Sherye on 27-Sep-02 at 06:04 PM
I knew that the opposite of love was indifference but not of beauty, art, faith and death. This is something I never thought of before. This is a timely pearl. I can use it when I talk to my housemates tonight. Sherye

You're right. Indifference is one of the most destructive, eroding, non-affirming emotions in the emotional spectrum.

Indifference eats away at itself and erodes all that is good and worthy in life.

Good Pearl.

Pam

heard that quote before and it's so true. Nothing like indifference to kill the joy of an occasion. Reminds me of Ken's pearl about the use of the word "whatever". Nothing squashes room for growth than indifference. Great pearl. - Mark

“Indifference is the strongest force in the universe. It makes everything it touches meaningless. Love and hate don't stand a chance against it.” - Joan Vinge
Everybody knows how much I love these kind of quotes. Very often, it’s only a few words which can challenge you in a way you can’t imagine. Indifference. What is indifference? Well, one of the definition I’ve found in the dictionary is: “absence of compulsion to or toward one thing or another”. When I read it, it did not tell me much and it is sad in a way cause we don’t really take the time to realize the power of that word. Indifference. What is indifference? Forget about the dictionary. Here is my definition of indifference:

Indifference is when you walk down the streets, you meet a poor man asking you for money and you pretend to not hear him.

Indifference is when you know someone who’s in the hospital but because it is not a relative or a close friend, you don’t have “the time” to visit that person.

Indifference is when you hear your neighbour fight and you decide to not do nor say anything because it is not of your business.

Indifference is when you see someone succeed and you don’t take the time to encourage that person.

Indifference is when you hear everyday in the news all these horrible things that are going on around the world and you’re so tired to hear about it that you take the remote and change the channel.

Indifference is when a friend calls you and tells you how desperate he is and how often he’s thinking about killing himself but you don’t take it seriously. “He’ll be okay.”, you say.

Indifference is when someone in your family has money problem and can’t even eat everyday but you just ignore it. “I can’t give all my money to everybody!”

I could go on, and on, and on. If we’d all take the decision to make a difference in this world, no matter how big that difference would be, we’d be amaze about that world we'd be living in. We keep saying that the opposite of love is hate. Well, this is not true.

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.

I wish these four last sentences were from me but I’ve read this somewhere and this is so true. Now, every time I’m indifferent towards something, I think about it and how serious this is and I try to change my perceptions. Being a Christian, the bible is something that I really put into practice in my everyday life. And the bible teaches that every time you have the chance to do good, but you don’t do it, you have sinned. I think this is a good way to stop being so indifferent in our life.

Here is my invitation: Let’s make a difference in this world.
