Sacrifice
Rock, also known locally as 'Velliyamkallu' ('Velliyam' means white in
Malayalam (local language of Kerala) and 'Kallu' means rock) is about 13
kilo metres into the Arabian sea off the Payyoli coast in the state of
Kerala on the south western coastline of India. This massive rock, much
dreaded by navigators was once a vantage point for the Marakkars to attack
the invading Portuguese. An entire crew of a Portuguese ship was killed
here. The beautiful natural engravings on the rock are worth exploring.
The Thikkoto light house which is a black & white hooped structure, overlooks
the Sacrifice Rock. The rock has destroyed several ships in the past.
The light house lies off the coast of Moodadi and was built following shipwrecks,
remains of some of which can still be seen here. The region around the
Sacrifice Rock is also the transit home of migratory birds on their journeys
north and south. Payyoli, on the coast, is a beautiful stretch of
golden sands with shallow waters that border the Sacrifice Rock. Depth
of sea water all around the Sacrifice Rock is about 18 metres. Absence
of land around the rock makes the approach to the rock very difficult.
Boats cannot move too close to the rock due to possible collision and hence
a swim is compulsory to reach the rock from the boat.
