All authors and publishers have a bias. In many cases, they have published very good work and the bias does not significantly influence their major conclusions. Other authors and publishers have a strong bias. Some internet sources of information show a strong bias. Students need to be careful when using the internet as a source of information. Internet information should be carefully compared with information available from more traditional sources of information, such as local libraries. Be sure to check with your teacher before using internet information in term papers. Links to Canadian occupational information is provided. Students living inside Canada should avoid using United Sates occupational information. Job opportunities and the educational requirements for an occupation can vary between Canada and the United States.
As a general rule, students should try to use the occupational information provided by the province or territory in which students live. Job opportunities and educational requirements can vary some from province-to-province. One of the more comprehensive sources of Canadian occupational information is the Alberta Occupational Profiles. Alberta provides descriptions of more occupations than some of the other Canadian provinces and territories.
Students are encouraged to print off occupational profiles, to study the information and to then discuss the information with a guidance counsellor or a career counsellor before making any career decisions. Occupational profiles are not a substitute for good career counselling.
