Plagiarism is considered a serious offense. Generally, plagiarism is considered to be cheating. Some people refer to plagiarism as the theft of somebody's ideas. Penalties for plagiarism vary from students receiving a failing grade on an assignment, to receiving a failing grade for a course to being expelled from the educational institution.
