A project which has spanned over a period of 10 years was a great challenge to
Lions Club of Nairobi Gigiri as this location was 170 Kms from Nairobi in a very
remote part of Kenya which is a semi arid area and constantly facing famine.
The people who were to benefit could not afford to educate their children as
getting food itself was a problem. This to our Club was an ideal locality
in which to start our Club’s Long Term Project.

The Project was developed at a total cost of US $ 267,000.00

The Club having completed all the above educational facilities, felt that there was still
a need for an educational facility  which would cater for self-employment in the future.

It was with this consideration in mind, the Gigiri Lions embarked on a project
to build and equip a Polytechnic in the area.

An application was made to L.C.I.F. for a grant to assist in achieving this goal.
After due consideration a sum of US $ 50,000.00 was granted and
the MELVIN JONES POLYTECHNIC was officially opened and handed
over by the Past International President Lion Rohit Mehta.
