Meet Heidi: A Family Story

by Brooke S. from FL

Chapter 2

Heidi sighed. Unlike four days ago, it had not been a very good day, and little did she know, but it was about to get worse. "Heidi, dear, can you come here for a minute?" Mrs. Shipton called. She walked into the rose-colored room. Her dad was lying on the bed and her mom was sitting on a bedside chair. "Honey, guess what?" her dad joyfully said " We are moving! I gave the pastor a letter today that said I was resigning as soon as school was over! I have also been offered a job in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. Your mom and I are flying there next week to check it out." I know you are excited!" Heidi's world all of a sudden seemed to fall before ner feet. "NO! We can’t leave! Dad, we have lived here for ten years! What about the horses? WE CAN'T LEAVE!!" No, this couldn’t be happening. She knew her father had been restless with his job and all, that he felt like he wasn’t doing God’s will, but this---not moving! Why, she loved her church, the kids there, and even the grownups and elders! She had practically grown up there, moving from Pennsylvania when she was two! They had made her feel at home, like it was her second home- and now, now they were moving? How could Dad do this to her? How could God do this to her? She had been good, doing her devotions, actually looking forward to going to church, and being nice to her parents and siblings. She stormed out of the room, tears running down her face, so she could barely see. It was like she was in a daze, or a bad dream. She pinched herself, but she remained in the real world. She fell down on the bed, fully clothed, and sobbed. One hour later, when she had no more tears to cry, she fell into a deep, restless sleep.

The next morning she overslept, having not set her alarm. She rushed herself into getting ready, which made her forget breakfast. She ran to the bus stop, where she remembered that Alyssa was gone on vacation. All throughout the day it got worse. She failed a Geography test, spilled ketchup on her new blouse, and lost her homework.

When she got home she ran to her room, once again tears streaming down her face. She fell asleep. An hour later she jumped when someone ruined the silence by knocking on her door. "C’mon in." she sniffled. Her mom opened the door carrying a tray with a pint of her favorite ice-cream and a glass of grape juice. "Here, honey, this ought to make you feel better." Her mom said. Heidi took the tray, and said thank you. As she was taking her first scrumptious bite of the Chocolate-Chip Cookie Dough treat, her mom sat on the bed. "Well, Heidi, I know that you are disappointed. I am too. But listen, if we don’t do what God is leading us to do, then we will be even more miserable. Your Dad is ready to encounter something new, to explore, to find God’s world. We need to enjoy that with him. Here’s your Bible. Read the book of Job. It might help. I love you." With that said, her mom gave her a kiss on the cheek and walked out, shutting the door behind her.

****-Dont forget to come back next week to find out what happens to Heidi and her family!*****

Verse of the week:

"Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will be faithful to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."
