Some of Our Field Trips

Museum of Nebraska Art

Harold Warp's Pioneer Village

Along with field trips, one place we visit once every couple of weeks, is our local Library. The kids enjoy checking out books and through our local homeschool group, we can use "Book Its" from Pizza Hut. Once they have read 10 books, they receive a free Personal Pan Pizza! Even Nate, who hasn't really enjoyed reading, has had fun choosing his own reading material. Our youngest daughter, who is starting to read on her own, has also enjoyed the trips to the library. Our oldest daughter has always loved to read, so going to the library often is a joy for her.

Museum of Nebraska Art

One field trip we took, was to the
MONA (Museum of Nebraska Art). Brian had the day off from work, and the kids had dental appointments, so we just made a day of it after their appointments. That was a fun day. The kids enjoyed seeing the different art, and discussing it. After our trip, we looked up some of our favorite artists on the internet. The kids then, did reports on their favorite artists. In their reports, they included what the artist's name was (of course), and what type of art he created (oil paintings, sculpture, etc.) Next, they included what kind of medium they used. If it was a painting, whether they used oil, ink, etc. They also discussed the textures and shapes found in the paintings. It was really a fun experience. Even Hannah, though she couldn't write out all her thoughts, she drew a picture to show us which one was her favorite, and dictated to me an explanation as to why it was her favorite.

Pioneer Village

We took a trip to Minden, NE back in March (2001), to see Harold Warp's Pioneer Village. It was such a fun day! We all got a chance to take a trip back into time, to see how the pioneers lived. The museum has the largest collection of Americana you can find. It has some items that can be "toured", such as some old trolley cars, an old yacht, and some old train engines. It took us almost all day to get through just the main building and a couple of old outbuildings. There is still so much to see yet, and we are planning to go back this spring or summer. The kids especially enjoyed seeing how technology has brought us so far. If you are ever in NE, or live here and have time, please make a point to visit the Pioneer Village in Minden, NE.

We have visited a couple more places and will soon be able to share about them with you! We have recently joined our local homeschool group. The kids participate in PE once a week with the group, and they also offer other field trips throughout the year that we can participate in, if we want to. One nice thing about homeschooling though, is that if you want to take off for a field trip one day, you can! Let your imagination go! You just have to make sure you plan your field trips so that you can still fit in all of your schoolwork. It is fun though, if you are learning about something in particular, and you can take your kids to SEE it! What a better way to learn, than to experience it first hand! We will include other field trips and events we experience as time allows. Stay tuned!
