SIXTH GENERATION on Glen's Father's side

Valentine EFFNER *

Valentine was born 9 February 1788 in Half Moon, Saratogo County, New York... The date and place of his death, and burial, is unknown... He married Catherine Brown on 7 January 1808, in St. James, Township of York, Upper Canada(137a)... Marriage performed by the Rev. George 0'Kill Stuart (Anglican)... Marriage Registry indicates they were of the Township of York which indicates they were of the rural area in which the Town of York was situated, not of the Town itself. [York became Toronto after 1840; was referred to as Little York or Muddy York at the time of the McKenzie Rebellion in 1837-39] (137)

It is believed Valentine was known as the "printer of York" in 1808-09 and the one awarded a land grant in 1809 by the York Executive Council.(137b)

Some unsubstantiated data has been found on the Internet that may prove to be parents of Valentine Effner, and will be used as reference until proven otherwise.. - - Joseph Effner, b. 1 November 1759, New York City, d. 8 July 1843, Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan, married 19 March 1787, Half Moon, Saratoga County, New York, to Ruth Doty, b. 22 January 1759, Quaker Hill, Dutchess County, New York, d. 25 March 1798, Schoharie, New York.

Catherine BROWN *

Catherine was born about 1783/84 in Pennsylvania, possibly Bucks County... She died after 1880 in Carlton Township, Orleans County, New York (she was listed as age 96 in 1880 Census)... The date and place of Catherine's birth, death and burial are yet to be determined.

It is unknown how long Catherine and Valentine's marriage lasted, or the circumstances for it's ending... However, it is believed the 1830 Census gives evidence where she was at that time... Niagara County 1830 Census for Wilson Township lists Catherine's son-in-law Alexander as head of household with family and one female 40 to 50 (Catherine would have been about age 46)... Although this census does not specify names it seems reasonable that Catherine would attend her daughters wedding in 1828 and possibly stay in the area, if her husband was no longer living, and eventually live with her daughter's family... It is also noted the census did not list a male 40 to 50 so it is assumed Valentine Effner was not present.

Sometime after 1830 Catherine marries for the second time; date and place unknown... Her married name is established by her brother's Will which pronounces, "I give and bequeath to my sister Catherine Farnum widow (whose maiden name was Catherine Brown) - - -"; the Will was dated 29 October 1852(6)... The Will also indicates Catherine was a Widow before 1852 when she begins living with her brother Matthias in Kuckville, Orleans County, New York... It is believed she went to live with him to assist in caring for thier ailing mother who died on 18 July 1852... She continued to live with her brother until his death, and with her grandsons, until her death.

1855 New York State census for Carlton Township, Orleans County, lists Matthias Brown, age 69, head of household, and his sister Catherine Farnham, age 71... Living with them are nephews (Catherine's grandson's), Alexander (Valentine), age 24, and Almeron (Calvin), age 26, and his wife and children... Why they are living with their grandmother and not their mother is a matter of curiosity... The 1860 Federal Census shows Almeron and Valentine living seperately with their individual families... However, living with Almeron and his family, is Catherine Farnum, age 76, listed as "mother" instead of "grandmother"... In 1875 the census still shows Catherine living with her grandson Almeron and family... However, in 1880 the State Census shows Catherine Farnum, age 96, living with grandson Valentine as his "mother-in-law"... Catherine was living with Valentine's family because Almeron had relocated to, and settled his family in Montrose, Michigan, during 1887.

Regarding Census Data
Relationships of persons living in a household that were not direct members of the family often
depended on the individual to whom the census enumerator spoke at the time of the census.

Children of Valentine and Catherine were:

i.... Catherine EFFNER *.

ii...Unknown Boy EFFNER

The existance of a boy child is speculation based on the 1830 Cenus for Wilson Township, Niagara County, New York... This census lists Alexander Wilson as head of household (Catherine Sr.'s son-in-law), two males under 5 (Almeron's age was 1 year 6 months, Valentine was 3 months), one male 15 to 20 (right age for a child born to Valentine and Catherine Effner after the birth of their daughter), one male and one female 20 to 30 (Alexander was 27 years 2 months, Catherine, the daughter, was 21 or 22), one female 40 to 50 (Catherine, the mother, would be 45)... Because this is speculation, further research is required to determine if Valentine and Catherine had more than one child... However, the one male, age between 15 and 20, doesn't correspond to any individual other than a child of Catherine Sr.... There is no relationship listed for the male that would indicate belonging to another parent or family.
