January's Word:
HISTORY

(hiss-to-ree)
George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was born February 22, 1732. He was a soldier before he became President in 1789.

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809. He became the 16th President of the United States in 1861. He was a lawyer before he became President.

Why do we know that? We know that because somebody wrote it down. That is
HISTORY. When people write things down and include the dates, they are writing HISTORY. This is a good way to remember something that happened years after it actually happens.

Things that happened when granni was a child are
HISTORY now. Things that are happening now will be HISTORY when you grow up. If you write it down, whether in a diary or in a journal, you are writing HISTORY for your children to read. Start writing a journal. It is fun and will be fun for you when you grow up and read it, too!

President George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. Everything he does now will be HISTORY someday. We will remember him as a courageous man who had to make serious decisions during his first year in office.
President Bush and his wife Laura live in the Whitehouse in Washington, DC with their two dogs, Spotty and Barney and their cat, India. Click below to celebrate Presidents Day by visiting our special website for February.....

February is Black History Month:

In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson proposed a "Negro History Week" to
honor the history and contributions of African-Americans. Nine years later,
his dream became reality. Woodson chose the second week of February to pay tribute to the birthdays of two Americans that dramatically affected the lives of Blacks: Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). The week-long observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
shown here, was a famous
Black American. Many
people honor him on
his birthday  January 15.
