Harley Walker b. Spring Creek, Black Hawk, Iowa, never married6

My grandmother, Margaret Robb said that Aquilas family owned a mill in or near Waverly, Bemer, Iowa. At least for a time, Ellen and Aquila lived over the mill. They were early Iowa pioneers. Aquila farmed adjacent to or with Ellens father, William Perry Bingaman. I believe John farmed in Rhodes, Iowa, southwest of Marshalltown. Grandma said he was a large man. He had 6 or 7 children. Harley was said to have become bewitched by a gypsy woman. He was so mesmerized that it drove him to madness and that is why he ended up in a mental institution. I do not know how much of this is true. Ellen, Aquilaa wife died quite young and her mother, Mary Geren lived with Aquila and helped to raise Mary Walker Lanes oldest daughter, Ivadell.

Great Grandmother

Mary Walker

b Spring Creek, Black Hawk, Iowa d about 1934/35 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, bur. Des Moines, Polk, Iowa,
7 m (1) 2 May 1982 at LaPorte City, Black Hawk, Iowa to Isaac Lane, divorced 9 Oct, 19078 (2) ______Mortis in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, div. (3) Robert S Bisby in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, div. (4) George Vernon Atchley9

Mary married the hired hand, Isaac Lane, against her fathers wishes. Aquila gave the couple land to farm, but the marriage did not last. After having three daughters they were divorced. Mary moved with her daughter, Margaret, to Des Moines to find work. She left her oldest daughter (and possibly the youngest, Emma Marie) in the care of her father and her grandmother. This must have been a hard time for Mary. Maybe not having the best judgment when it came to men she married three more times. Her marriages to the next two were disasters. I believe ______Mortis had several children from a previous marriage and those children lived with them. My grandmother talked about her step brothers and sisters. She remembered seeing Jesse Mortis, age 11, burned to death when he tried to fill a kerosene stove and it blew up. Mortis, also, had a son, Harry, and daughters, Lala, Lizzie and Velma. Velma married ______Otta. They lived near Los Angeles and had a daughter Betty. Mary finally found a good man in George Atchley and he is remembered fondly by my mother. He had children from a previous marriage, a son named Vernon and a daughter, Betty, who married ______Nackel. Mary Walker Atchley was a mid-wife.
