Now, in case you don't know what a dog fight is, or don't know how it works I'll explain it a little. Dog fighting is an illegal activity in which dogs are bred and then trained to fight. They are allowed from an early age to chase and kill small animals such as cats, rabbits, and little dogs. When they are ready they are placed in a pit, (which is usually an area enclosed with plyboard) and attack each other, often until the death of one or both dogs. Spectators place bets on which dog they think will win. The fight will usually last about an hour or until one of the dogs is unwilling or unable to fight any longer. If the dog who loses the fight doesn't die in the pit, it will often lose it's life to the outraged owner. The "loser" is often beaten to death, starved to death, or in some other way tortured, to prevent the owner from developing a reputataion for breeding low quality fighters. The dogs who don't die fighting, or the "winners", sometimes die hours or days later from loss of blood, infection, shock, and exhaustion. Dog fighters are sometimes involved in other illegal practices such as gambling, and the distributing and/or using of illegal drugs and weapons. They will steal Pit Bulls, and other large breed dogs, as it gets expensive to buy them. You should NEVER give your Pit Bull away to someone because it increases these chances.
The desire and urges to fight are in their genes, which have been built through generations of selective breeding for certain traits. They recieve extra training from their owners, to build up strength and stamina, but they are born knowing how to fight, it is not trained into them. IThey don't love to fight It's just an instinct that is stronger in their breed because they have been bred for the purpose of fighting for so many generations. Dogs who are used as fighters, are usually aggressive towards animals, but not people. They were specifically bred for fighting purposes, so the fighters wanted dogs they could easily handle. Fighting dogs are mistaken as being a danger to humans, and are automatically euthanized by many shelters. This is a sad fact because these dogs would make just as good of pets if they were given a chance. With proper socialization and in proper homes they can live with other animals. Unfortunately, because of the misunderstanding public they are not given a chance to obtain the long, happy-ending life they deserve. Dog fighting is not only harmful to the dogs, but children and other animals as well. Young children are sometimes present at these events, which can lead to insensitivity to animal suffering, and there are frequently firearms present because of the large amounts of money and drugs being dealt with.
Dog fighting is now illegal in all fifty states and is a felony in forty-three. Spectating a dog fight is illegal in forty-six states and is a felony in twelve of them. If you notice suspicious gatherings in unusual places, or have suspicions of dogfighting in your neighborhood please contact your local law enforcement and let them know!
