The
girl then introduced herself, “I’m Cat Miller. These are my friends, Lars
Raeda (the black boy) and Toft Macher (the white boy). We’re the guards here.
I must apologize for attacking you guys because we didn’t know who you were
and what you were up to. We’re given this mission to protect Esonia from
people of PN Centre and we must do everything we can to make sure that she’s
safe.”
“It’s okay.” Max
said, “I’m glad actually you mentioned her name.”
“Thank you Max for
helping her out.” Cat said softly, “She could’ve been defeated by Mohia
without your help.”
“You’re welcome.” Max
just tried to be polite.
Cat and Lars were given
word to bring the company to the hospital to heal their wounds. Then, they were
instructed to bring them to see the mayor, Witt Macher and his wife, Linda at
their house.
Witt was a gentle and
friendly old man who understood and felt sympathetic towards the group. He
immediately offered them a place to stay and told them that they would be safe
here in the Underground City. He roughly mentioned a secret group—the DARK,
would be able to protect them from intruders. Toft, Lars and Cat were all
important members of the DARK.
“I’m terribly sorry
that we aren’t able to offer you any refreshments.” explained Linda as she
asked them all to sit down in the living room, “Since we’re living in the
shadows, it’s not convenient for us to go around looking for food. We use food
substitute injections instead. If you are hungry, feel free to use a doze.”
They replied that they were okay about it. The three young guards had to
return to their duties and they could not stay for long. The company began
talking with Witt and Linda.
“Do you know what happened to the Vega City up there?”
asked Heidis, “What happened? Why is it destroyed?”
“We used to live there—we are the survivors of the
attack.” Witt told them, “Felin the Tigas came and destroyed the city a year
ago, taking many innocent lives. He came to take Esonia away to face the Boss,
but she wasn’t there. He thought we were hiding her and in rage, he burnt the
whole city down.”
Heidis felt her heart ached. Luckily, she was not involved in
the burning, or how could she face the citizens?
“I guess it’s because of this reason Esonia didn’t dare
to return to us for fear that further harm would come to us.” Linda said with
a sigh, “Witt and I were both scared to death of what had become of her.
She’s alone, facing ruthless killers such as Felin and Mohia. Thank God she
came back yesterday. She’s injured in the fight with Mohia. Luckily, she was
not severely wounded. If she happen to meet Mohia or Felin at this time, she
would probably be killed.” She went close to Max and held his hands, “Thank
you Max. She’s very precious to us.”
Max
replied with a smile, “You’re welcome.” A question raised, “So Esonia
used to live in the Vega City? Why did she challenge the PN Centre?”
Witt and Linda both
shook their heads together. Witt admitted, “I don’t know. Honestly, it’s
hard to figure out what that child is thinking. Well, she has been through so
much—she lived in danger since she was nine years old. Her parents were just
and honest people. Unfortunately, Felin attacked her house one day twelve years
ago and killed her parents. She was the only witness. She was young and scared,
she could not tell us a thing about the attack. We could not comprehend the
reason of this tragedy, but we believe that her parents had never done wrong to
anyone to deserve this revenge. We looked after her and sheltered her ever
since.”
Linda
added, “She was once a jolly, active girl. But after the attack, she became
silent and scared. Felin didn’t give the poor girl a chance and kept pursuing
her. We tried our best to protect her but what she needed wasn’t protection.
She has other ideas.”
“She
left us one day when she was sixteen,” Witt told them, “without an
explanation. She returned two weeks later, all injured and bleeding. She had
been to the PN Centre to challenge her parents’ killers. We tried to sway her
out of this dangerous activity, saying that if she wanted revenge, she should at
least get someone to help her rather than to go alone. But she told us that, she
wasn’t taking revenge. She’s a mystery to us.”
