This is the song I was named after:

THEY CALL THE WIND MARIAH

CHORUS: MARIAH, MARIAH, THEY CALL THE WIND MARIAH

AWAY OUT HERE THEY GOT A NAME
FOR RAIN AND WIND AND FIRE
THE RAIN IS TESS, THE FIRE'S JO
AND THEY CALL THE WIND MARIAH

MARIAH BLOWS THE STARS AROUND
AND SENDS THE CLOUDS A'FLYIN'
MARIAH MAKES THE MOUNTAINS SOUND
LIKE FOLKS UP THERE IS DYIN'
BEFORE I KNEW MARIAH'S NAME
AND HEARD HER WAIL AND WHININ'
I HAD A GIRL AND SHE HAD ME
AND THE SUN WAS ALWAYS SHININ'
BUT THEN ONE DAY I LEFT MY GIRL
I LEFT HER FAR BEHIND ME
AND NOW I'M LOST, SO GOL-DARN LOST
NOT EVEN GOD CAN FIND ME (chorus)
OUT HERE THEY GOT A NAME FOR RAIN
FOR WIND AND FIRE ONLY
BUT WHEN YOU'RE LOST AND ALL ALONE
THERE AIN'T NO WORD BUT LONELY
BUT I'M A LOST AND LONELY MAN
WITHOUT A STAR TO GUIDE ME
MARIAH BLOW MY LOVE TO ME
I NEED MY GIRL BESIDE ME (chorus)

First and foremost, I am a philosopher. This means that, at heart, I am a scientist, and I wish to know truth. I like ideas and knowledge for their own sake. I glean principles from knowledge as I seek truth. But, a philosopher seeks to apply those principles to the rest of the world, and to live by them. A philosopher seeks the good life. A philosopher seeks to make the world more just.

The framework of my existence is philosophical inquiry and exposition, which translates into my family and friends, my career aspirations, and my tastes in art and music. To find out exactly what I mean, you need to read four things. First, read The Writer's Life Then read What is Philosophy? Finally, read The way the real world works, part 1 , part 2 and part 3 , as well as This is an offering, part 1 , part 2 , part 3 From these essays you will probably discern that I am an unabashed and hardcore utopian, in the 19th century mode of philosophers who thought that Utopia can be achieved through technological and spiritual means. Of course, they were proved incorrect, but not wrong: their predictions did not come true, but only because they used the incorrect premises and analytical tools. I am attempting to fashion the correct analytical tools.

"The difference between the scientist and the engineer is that the former seeks what is True, the latter what is Good." - John Horgan, The End of science. My first aim is to know the Truth about how humans behave: I want science to elucidate our subjective experiences. Once I know the Truth, I aim to engineer myself and my environment to produce that which is Good.

Thus, I try to approach the world by writing about it in as unbiased a manner as possible, to get at what is really going on. But, once I understand the dynamics - the patterns and the elements of life - I am quite intent on using all my resources on Earth during my life to implement utopia. All the elements you see below are devoted to exploration (traveling), exposition (essays), and construction (social connections). To these ends, I also maintain an email list of people to whom I send essays hot off the press. If you wish to be on the list, please email me: marriahstar@yahoo.com
