Introduction

Winamp is freeware available through Nullsoft Inc., used for playing audio files in a number of formats, including the popular MP3 format. This online guide provides information on all Winamp Lite 2.72 functions. Other versions of Winamp are also available through Nullsoft, Inc.

This manual provides detailed instructions on downloading the Winamp player, setting preferences and options, and enhancing the program by installing various plug-ins and graphic, downloadable face plates, called skins.

File Formats

Winamp 2.72 Lite supports the following file formats:
  • MP3, MP2 (MPEG audio layers. The numbers 2 and 3 represent audio layers)
  • MOD, S3M, SM, IT (digital synthesized music formats)
  • MIDI, MID (musical instrument digital interface)
  • WAV/VOC (digital audio file, often voice files – good for recordings made via phone)
  • CDA (compact disc audio)
  • WMA (Windows Media audio)
  • AS/ASFS (Audiosoft secure MP3 file)

System Requirements

In order to download Winamp Lite 2.72, your operating system must be Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT 4 or greater, running on a Pentium processor. Winamp is available for MacIntosh systems, as well. This guide addresses only the Windows version.

You also need an Internet connection to download the program. (No connection is needed, however, to play audio files through Winamp, once you've downloaded them to your computer.) You may also play compact discs through your Winamp player without making an Internet connection.
